Flying to Spain at 3.40pm, Refused an annual leave day.

I booked flights for my holiday for friday 2nd October two months ago, I fly at 3.40pm, I have the saturday off then the following week. Now I finish work at 2 that day and it's 40 mins to the airport so im gonna get there all sweaty and knackered for my flight to Spain (that's if I get to the airport in time)!!!! I asked my manager TWO MONTHS ago for the friday off and he told me no because it would leave them short that day (im a reserve), So I said well the next best thing which is far from ideal is to perhaps work with someone who could finish off and I can leave 20 mins earlier than our finish time although if the volume of mail isn't too high I might even get done early and my manager replied with a "maybe".
Now this morning ive reminded my boss about the friday and pleaded again to just give me that day off and he said no because someone else has booked that friday off. I have found out who it was that booked it and asked the postie when did he book it and he told me a couple of weeks ago.
So to me that is bad management and a little out of order that I was refused 2 months ago to take one day off but someone else comes in after me and was allowed!!!

Is this a union rep case? If I miss that flight my holiday is ruined and money is gone.

Yes it is bad management but nothing new there........

You could ask for a little flexibility - you know the one where you give them 30 minutes extra one day and have it back on the Saturday.
You could stick half your meal relief on the end and gain another 20 minutes.

However if I was your partner you would leave when you needed to and I would finish the duty. You would simply owe me a favour.
It can't be that hard to find someone in your DO who isn't a total selfish prick is it?

well I would definitely tell the rep about that, but there is nothing to stop you taking the day off without pay. he cant do anything about it really. it is a days pay loss to you but a least you'll piss him off.

Other salut ion is to swap your day off with someone who has the Friday off!! Simples.

except a charge of abandonment of duty and a possible dismissal for such. You still need authorisation even for unpaid special leave on days you are expected to work.

That's why you never tell management about your plans. Keep everything secret (funerals, sex changes, secret Saturday role playing) to yourself. Take a sicky to cover the needed day,make sure it's not 3 days in a row,(as you will get a warning) and never stick it on Facebook for all to see.
Asking them for time off and giving a reason is just folly! At best they use the info against you. Plus, you never get days off at Royal Mail anymore...mainly to save money since the company is currently dying on its ass!

I wanted to take a lieu day (created by a Bank Holiday clashing with my day off) and gave FOUR MONTHS notice. Declined. It took around 3 weeks to be told it had been knocked back too. The reason I want the day off is I'm going to a gig the night before and it's a fair distance away, so I won't get back until late. It's not the end of the world and I'm not that arsed either way but the principle is there. Usually, I'm one to just ask around to see if anyone wants to cover the day for cash but I'm not having it this time. I'm pretty sure that a) I should have been advised it had been declined in a couple of days, since I only wanted to take one day's leave and b) I didn't need to give anywhere near that amount of notice. What gets me is that I could ask to take it unpaid and I wouldn't be surprised if they'd let me. How can that be right? They can cover it or they can't. If I have the available leave and they can cover it, I should be able to use it. I asked our CWU rep and his advice was to hang fire and try again nearer the date when the fabled 'new staff' have arrived. Not holding my breath.

What kind of company can't manage to repay a lieu day, having been given FOUR MONTHS notice? Oh, I've remembered. One that's rapidly spiralling down the sh*tter.

Just be sure you don't go out for a meal a couple of days before and suffer with food poisoning. You have to take a couple days sick and would leave them short.
