Royal Mail to consider options for Carnoustie Post Office

Royal Mail is exploring the possibility of relocating Carnoustie’s closure-threatened post office within the town.

A petition started by community Facebook group Our Carnoustie has already attracted 1,500 signatures against the closure of the Queen Street sorting office.

Angus South MSP Graeme Dey said: “The major reason for Royal Mail are contemplating moving their Carnoustie operation is, they tell me, capacity and accessibility issues at Queen Street, although of course saving money is also a factor.”

Mr Dey said Royal Mail is clear that in the event of closure customers would have the option of having undelivered parcels redelivered at a time that suited them.

He said an alternative pick up point within Carnoustie would also be established if Queen Street closed.

He added: “However, like the public and locally-based Royal Mail staff I want a delivery office facility to be retained in the area and if, as I think we would all perhaps accept, Queen Street isn’t entirely suited to the demands now being made of it, then the sensible compromise would be a purpose-built alternative premises nearby.

“To that end I am pleased Royal Mail have agreed to consider what might be possible and enter into discussions with Angus Council, who are willing to work with them in that regard.

“There is no guarantee that we can win the fight to retain a proper delivery office operation in the town but I do hope a palatable alternative, for both the staff and customers, to what is proposed can be arrived at.”
