Postie Sean McCullagh retires after 52 years of service

http://ulsterherald.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Postman-retiresSDC11772-660x430.jpgAFTER over half a century in service, well-known postman Sean McCullagh has delivered his last letter before enjoying a much-deserved retirement.

The Gortin man started as a postman in 1964, following in the footsteps of his father who retired a couple of years earlier.
Over the years he has worked in the Omagh, Plumbridge and Gortin areas.


Sean became a full-time postman in 1967 and moved to Omagh until 1976, before relocating to Gortin delivery office for seven years.

In 1973 when the Gortin post mistress retired, Sean moved to work in Plumbridge before the mail was relocated back to the Omagh delivery office in 2014.

Paying tribute to Sean, his manager Paul Devlin said he “always went beyond the call of duty.”
“Sean remembers his father delivering mail in the 1950’s up in Barnes Gap, a mountainous area outside Plumbridge,” Mr Devlin added. “The postman from Gortin would bring the mail up to him and he would then walk the six mile round trip delivering the mail by foot as he did not drive.

“Sean said as his father got older he would have driven him around in a tractor or his old Morris van and sometimes down to collect the mail by tractor depending on the weather.”

So after joining Royal Mail himself and spending his life working in the community, last Thursday was a day tinged with emotion for Sean has he reflected on his long career.

His colleagues marked his retirement by making a presentation last Thursday morning, before he left to complete his very last delivery.

Sean said, “I’ll go out in my van for the last time today and it will be emotional because I deliver letters to homes in the Plumbridge and Gortin area and I know all my customers so well. It has been a really enjoyable job.”
