Postman avoids going to jail for stealing cash from greetings cards

A former postman has avoided going to prison after being caught stealing cash from birthday cards sent in the post.

Allan Bowland, 32 of Manton Close, Trowbridge, was charged with five counts of stealing postal packets containing greetings cards with cash from the Royal Mail in Bath.

Bath Magistrates' Court was told that between February 1 and June 6, Bowland stole a quantity of postal packets, namely greetings cards and the cash inside, from the Royal Mail.

On May 13 he stole four postal packets containing greetings cards with cash inside to the value of £10 and on June 8 and June 10 he stole a postal packet containing greetings cards with cash inside to the value of £15.


Bowland indicated a guilty plea to all of the charges when he appeared before magistrates on August 13.

Magistrates sentenced him to ten months in prison suspended for 18 months and him told to carry out 240 hours unpaid work over the next 12 months.

Magistrates also ordered him to pay £3,000 in costs, a £80 victim surcharge, and a criminal courts charge of £180.

At the time of sentencing magistrates told Bowland: "This was theft in breach of trust of your employer and impacts on confidence in the postal system. Your actions caused direct harm to members of the public."
