Re: Airport network
The mail trains reintroduced between London and Newcastle might have reduced the need for flights to and from Newcastle.

Re: Airport network
The Exeter-Stansted flight ended and in it's place is a van crossover operation at Swindon.
EMA-Bournemouth is likely to be replaced by a similar arrangement at either Bristol or Swindon.

Re: Airport network
Probably long term apart from the channel Islands, Isle of Man, Isles of Silly, any of the little Islands up the north of Scotland and perhaps Standstead to Edinburgh there won't be any flights within the UKswindonandy wrote:The Exeter-Stansted flight ended and in it's place is a van crossover operation at Swindon.

Re: Airport network
Heard a rumour a few weeks ago Royal Mail is going back on the railways in a big way. A bit like what La Poste is doing in France with its bulk/freight operation.

A couple if that? But knowing Royal Mail will build new ones and go full circle.
Staffords still there so is Doncaster and Tonbridge but all the nearby Mail Centres have closed. Was Bristol Parkway mothballed/demolished?

Re: Airport network
I can't see the business meeting special delivery/first class standards of service if they totally disband the air network. Especially with mail originating/ going to the more distant parts of the country. In Aberdeen the majority of our SD/first class mail both inward and outward flies. Two flights out in the evening and 1 back into Aberdeen airport at 3am with up to 5.5 tons of loose loaded mail a night plus 4 600s coming up with a load from Edinburgh airport.
The railway platform in Aberdeen is long gone and to be honest the train from Edinburgh or Glasgow takes just as long as driving so unless they move the despatch times to significantly later it just won't work. Bearing in mind that some of the more outlying DOs don't get mail until nearly 0900 from an 0640 final despatch as it is.

Re: Airport network
There are not long haul flights under threat but the short legs. Why fly planes every night to/from Exeter/Stanstead when driving time isn't all that much more and isn't grounded by the weather. The savings on aircraft will be large, savings from potentially closing airport units or at least downsizing them significantly will be more. EH etc flights will be safe because there isn't the rail capacity to get up there on a 1C schedule. 2C Mail to much of Scotland has been going by rail for quite a while now, at least from Swindon (not directly loaded, to one of the remaining sites.)
The platform we used to use at Swindon is still there but now used by Network Rail and the facilities are long gone. Bristol went at the same time as the MC moved to Filton I think. Reading has a car park on the MC and the stations have been rebuilt. Rail services will be the equivalent of national trunking routes, very few places will be directly served.
I believe Warrington still has an active terminal - WRT where the MORs go and Doncaster has (had?) one in reasonably recent use - South Yorkshire Terminal?

Re: Airport network
Stansted air hub are in the process of building up the platforms on the left of the loading docks so that 4 Mercedes long wheel based vans can drive up a ramp and park ready to transfer mail back to Bournemouth with a flight that will now be diverted into them in due course

Yes, Warrington is the only rail platform between PRDC (London) and Glasgow, and now there's also PRDC - Newcastle.swindonandy wrote:There are not long haul flights under threat but the short legs.
