73 year old Fulbeck postman retiring after 57 years!

David Coe is among the longest serving employees of the Royal Mail, and he is so well-known and loved by residents of his round at Fulbeck that they are even holding a special event in his honour at the village hall in September.

Ahead of this, a retirement party organised by David’s son Andy, also a postman, took place at the Electric Club last week. He was joined by both current colleagues and those who had worked with David since he started off as a telegram boy aged 15 in 1958. “Back then we used to go around town on a BSA Bantam 125,” remembers David. Even an accident on the motorbike early on didn’t put him off. “It has been a good job. You get to meet so many people. I’ve been going around Fulbeck village for 38 years.”

Although he would like to carry on, after such a long time delivering post over 12 miles, six days a week, a bad knee has forced David to retire.

He is now looking forward to spending more time with wife Maureen, known to him affectionately by her maiden surname ‘Kelly’, son Andy, and daughter Helen, a nurse in Nottingham.

Brian Cross, 80, who also began as a telegram boy, added: “Fulbeck will miss David.”

in the next few decades it will be the norm. these younguns that are just starting out will be working into their 70s ..in the future when scientists work out how to extend life till we reach our 120th birthday we'll be at work till you reach 110
