Greenham to be put back on the map

GREENHAM is set to be put back on the map after disappearing from Royal Mail’s postal address system earlier this month.

Councillors had expressed concerns that Royal Mail had stopped using the settlement in its latest addressing system, resulting in acting clerk Heather Westbrook contacting Royal Mail to have the issue rectified.

At a meeting of the parish council, Mrs Westbrook confirmed that Royal Mail had asked for a list of addresses affected so that it could look to have Greenham reinstated.

However, once the list is submitted, Royal Mail will need to contact each residence to ask if they object to the change. Providing there are less than 20 per cent who object Greenham will once again be used in the address.

Mrs Westbrook said: “We don’t know the reason behind this per se, but in conversations I’ve had with the Post Office it would indicate when they went computerised or digital in their sorting system it was a data input error – nothing more than that.

“Once I’ve submitted the list of addresses, which I’m in the process of compiling now, I fully expect Greenham to be put back in the system.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said that their address system lists Greenham as a locality of Thatcham, but not Newbury.

Therefore properties considered to be Newbury did not include Greenham in the address.

The spokesperson continued: “We would add that Thatcham and Newbury are the correct postal towns and as such they will not be removed from the postal address.

“We would always ask customers to use the correct post town and postcode to ensure their mail is delivered efficiently.”

Just think a few years ago,the Russians would gladly have removed Greenham from the map and all the women free of charge.
