Hi all,
Spend the morning lurking in this forum after googling Royal Mail Interview questions and its been very interesting. However I do have a problem with the documents I need to bring for my interview tomorrow, namely my passport, it had expired and since saving to move I didnt get it renewed, since moving its now been lost so I need to apply for a new one in order to bring it to interviews such as the one tomorrow (didnt realise it would be needed). So my question is, if I dont have my passport is there any point turning up? I have read in this forum that they will turn you away if you dont bring all the documents so wont even get an interview in any case.
I also dont have a birth certificate, long story short, name was changed after birth, never used birth name, always used passport since then for IDs etc. So even if I have my birth certificate it doesnt show the name Im known by and nor does it match any documents at all.
On advice from this forum, this morning, I did email the application email address to ask, this was around 9.30. Its now the end of the working day and I havent heard anything back and my interview is supposed to be at 11am an hours travel from here so I need to leave before 10.
To complicate it further, I have hearing trouble so cant ring them up to ask about it. Im stumped. Would be grateful for any advice.
off topic, I have read a lot on here that many people dont last longer than a few weeks, why is this? It is simply the walking about? or something else like bad management etc? I couldnt find any reason for it and its made me a bit nervous as I've been out of work for a few months now and really need a job.

Re: interview document help
If you're struggling with the 'Proof Of Identity' bit the checklist it also says you can use a British Photocard Driving Licence to prove your identity (Prov or Full). Do you have one?
If it's the 'Proof of Right To Work in UK' you're struggling without the passport or birth certificate.
I doubt you'll get an email reply from HR in time for your interview, it's summer holiday time and like everyone else they're probably under resourced.
(I'm still waiting for my contract.....).
Being a newbie myself, I know the procedure does say you'll get turned away, but my docs were checked as part of the interview not before, so if you're sat in the interview and they chuck you out cue severe
but depends on how much you want the job and how often you think vacancies will be offered at the location you want to enable you to cancel the interview beforehand rather than be embarrassed.
I would go, dressed like my life depended on it, taking as much official ID as you can, properly organized and arranged neatly ie Drivers licence, HMRC documents with NI number, bank statements, bus pass, NUS card, bank cards with your name etc. explain right at the beginning of the interview/offering profuse apologies, stating you're in the process of getting it sorted and ace the interview to make up for your admin falldown.
Some of the more experienced posties on here who know more about the interview process may have different suggestions.
They can only turn you away - not sure how rejecting/turning down/cancelling the interview would look for any future applications.
Probably don't need to say this but suggest you get the passport renewed ASAP and even if your birth certificate doesn't show your current name get a copy and a copy of whatever document shows proof of name change - you'll probably need them for any job you apply for. As an aside, and pardon my ignorance but I thought you needed a birth certificate to get a passport....
All the above is, as I said, advice from a newbie who went through the interview process about 2 months ago, so make of it what you wish - whatever the outcome you'll have learned something from it.
Good Luck

Re: interview document help
Thanks for the reply, its the proof of right to work, basically....
I was born with 1 name, soon after birth my mother remarried and gave me that name, I didnt know the former until I was about 12 and needed a passport. Name change was done and I've lived with the new name ever since. My mother has long since lost the proof of name change and is no help at all in trying to sort that part out. Since my passport has been good enough for everything else since, I didnt really care about the birth certificate. Had no idea I would need a passport for a job app as I havent before, so its come as a bit of a shock as I only applied last Tuesday, did the test on Weds, was emailed on friday about an interview tomorrow. So overall, not had much chance to get it sorted out. I had to get my girlfriend to print all the needed stuff at her place of work today to have it ready for tomorrow.
Im out of work and down to my last £10 in the bank, and not allowed benefits, so dont have the £72.50 for the new passport, I would have to borrow it. Its not a great situation I freely admit. If this one doesnt work out then at least I have learned something and will need to try and sort it out for future applications.
