A request from Royal Mail has been made to make the 26th December a non service day ! no decision has yet been made from Ofcom. We all know the review which Ofcom announced into Royal Mail's effierency and DSA pricing is a clear sign Ofcom has declared war on Royal Mail and have powers to enforce efficiency targets in all offices in the UK if they think that is the best method to make Royal Mail more efficient so it is not guaranteed that they will grant a non service day.

If they do then everyone will get a day off on the 26th December but if your rest day falls on the 26th you will not be credited with a day off as the 26th as it falls on a Saturday is not a bank holiday and therefore you do not get a credit.

If I remember correctly, last time this happened and we had the day off, we didn't actually get it for nothing, we had to make up the time in the previous week. The 26th isn't my day off so I have no problem with that, it is however, very unfair on the people who have a day off scheduled for the 26th to have to make up time for a day they won't be working anyway.

Years ago we had to claw back the time ! But about 6 years ago the CWU negotiated that there would be no claw back of hours for non service days so you will not be required to adjust your hours !

how can folk be forced to make up time they don't owe?
if they give you 26th as day off then you'll work your contracted hours that week as a normal shift pattern.

If you are on a rotating day off and your day off is saturday you gain nothing, I am unsure what day off I am that week, it is not friday or saturday, I will get the saturday as an extra. I may well be off on xmas eve, I haven't looked, that to me is unfair.

Last time the 26th fell on a saturday, despite what Dingo say's, in my office we had to do extra hours if necessary on the run up to xmas. Nobody argued it as we were getting the saturday off. Those people who were due off on the saturday anyway got the right arse about it.

The last time Boxing day fell on Saturday it was 2009, and before that 1998.

Dear Colleague

Christmas Arrangements 2009

Please find attached to this LTB the Christmas Arrangements Agreement for 2009.

The Agreement is based on operational arrangements from last year, including the following:

· Payment of Scheduled Attendance rate for Pre Scheduled Overtime

· Extended Enquiry Office Opening Times

· Packet Re-Delivery Service

· Sunday Collections

· Ability to work day off for Day in Lieu or Overtime payment

· Pre-scheduling of hours against forecast workload

Saturday 26th December 2009 will be a non-service day in Royal Mail. This means that anyone due to attend work on that day will not be required to work and, more importantly, there will be No Clawback of hours for those members concerned, in line with previous agreements. The Bank Holiday normally due on the 26th will now be re-scheduled to Monday 28th December 2009.

This means that the vast majority of our members will enjoy a four day break with their families over the Christmas Period; some even longer depending on their individual duty arrangements.

Please note that separate arrangements have been put in place in Scotland for Saturday 2nd January/Monday 4th January 2010 between the CWU Scotland/Northern Ireland Divisional Reps and Royal Mail Regional Managers.

Any enquiries relating to this LTB should be addressed to the appropriate Assistant Secretary as follows:

Bob Gibson's Office, reference 170
Email address: hnutley@cwu.org

Martin Collins' Office, reference L25.09

if they say you must claw-back the hours this xmas and sat 26th is your day off you owe nothing, you just work your scheduled times that week, and those who have one of mon-fri as day off may work the extra hours each day, that way everyone is equal.
if no claw-back is required then those with sat off don't lose, they just don't get a freeby,
only ones who are guaranteed to get shafted are reserves as usual

Last time this happened I seem to remember that my entire DO had their day off changed to the Saturday, so everybody worked Monday to Thursday with Xmas day on the Friday. The day off covers were roped in to cover off the extra parcels and specials etc that always build up over Xmas.

If the Saturday is made a non-service day, expect the Tues-Thurs to be mega mega heavy with Amazon and other parcels, probably even normally quieter walks will end up having to cut off
