Royal Mail is helping students prepare for the world of work through a new partnership with the Career Ready charity.

From today, Royal Mail will offer opportunities to its staff to become mentors through Career Ready’s structured programme for 16-19 year olds, which sits alongside the students’ school or college coursework. The initiative is designed to help students unlock their potential as they start their journey from education to the workplace.

Royal Mail mentors will be matched with a student and meet up with them over a 12-month period to offer support and advice for transitioning into the workplace, making informed decisions about their future aspirations and improving their employability skills.

Royal Mail is aiming to engage 50 employees across the country as mentors in the first year of its partnership with Career Ready.

Royal Mail Head of Corporate Responsibility and Community Investment Lily Heinemann said: “Royal Mail is delighted to be partnering with Career Ready to help students prepare for the workplace. Mentoring can provide invaluable guidance and support to young people and our staff can draw on their diverse experiences and backgrounds to help make a difference to the lives of the UK’s future workers.”

Career Ready Head of Fundraising and Business Development Anita Konczak said: “We are so grateful to our network of national and local supporters who contribute their time, skills and enthusiasm – without which, none of our work would be possible. It is great to have Royal Mail join us as a new strategic partner. Royal Mail volunteers can offer a unique perspective and working one-to-one with a student they can have a real impact on their development.”

Royal Mail mentors will be assigned their students towards the end of the year, with their first session taking place in January 2016.

Career Ready (formerly known as Career Academies UK) is a national charity that links schools and colleges with employers to help prepare young people for the world of work.
Established in 2002, nearly 7,000 young people aged 16-19 have been through our programme, which runs alongside their academic studies.
The programme is built on four pillars which give students regular contact with working people and places: face-to-face mentoring by someone in work; masterclasses to help develop key skills and attitudes needed in their future career; workplace visits that provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse of local and national employers; and work-based experiences and internships to allow students to put their learning into practice in a real work environment.
We currently work with nearly 200 schools and colleges across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, largely in urban areas of social need.

It never ceases to surprise me what RM will do to try and portray a forward looking employer to the gullible public and shareholder, whilst having some of the worst practises, treatment of employees that a unionised workforce in the UK have to put up with. I wouldn't recommend working for RM for anything other than the pay, especially if you want to further your ambitions and learn how to enjoy being part of a progressive and dynamic workforce.

I couldn't have put it better myself,all the bullying and hassle when you dare to only work your paid hours will be dismissed with a wave and the poor trainee will be handed another edition of the courier to read and see what it's "really " like.
