A POSTMAN was struck on the head with a bottle and water bomb and punched in a Grimsby street – prompting Royal Mail bosses to call a halt on deliveries.

The 40-year-old was the victim of an attack in Highfield Avenue by several men and suffered facial injuries.

Humberside Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses.

The postman has now recovered from his injuries and was back at work, as Royal Mail chiefs warned that attacks on postmen and women would not be tolerated.

As reported, Humberside Police launched an investigation and appealed for witnesses after saying a man walking down Patrick Street into Highfield Avenue, Grimsby, was hit with a water bomb.

Although the assault took place between 5.15pm and 5.30pm on Wednesday, July 15, police issued an appeal this week, urging anyone who was in the vicinity at the time or who had information to get in touch.

It has since been revealed that the man was a postal worker carrying out his deliveries.

Police said he knocked on the door of the house where the water bomb came from.

He was confronted by several men and chased in Highfield Avenue.

One of the men hit the 40-year-old over the head with a bottle, while another man punched the postman.

The postman, who has not been named, sustained facial injuries and was left shaken by the incident. Officers investigating the assault asked witness to contact them.

Royal Mail spokeswoman Ronit Wolfson, said: "We can confirm that a postman in Grimsby was assaulted while on his rounds.

"He is now back at work and has made a full recovery."

She added: "Thankfully incidents like this are exceedingly rare, but we take these matters extremely seriously – our hardworking postmen and women serve their communities six days a week and expect to do so safely.

"Following advice from the police, deliveries were suspended to a number of addresses in the Highfield Avenue area.

"Deliveries have now resumed. We apologise to any customers who faced any inconvenience as a result."

Royal Mail's website confirmed it "cannot deliver to an address if it puts the health and safety of our staff at risk".

The company said: "If one of our staff is assaulted or attacked by a dog, the suspension is likely to be in the short-term."
