This new series starting tonight is a behind-the-scenes look inside the Post Office as it undergoes the biggest shake-up in its history.

The 11,500-strong network of Post Office branches has been in crisis lately. Your local sub-Post Office – assuming it hasn't already closed its doors – may soon become a counter in your local convenience store or petrol station. It's the kind of change nobody relishes but somebody has to make happen – and that somebody is Caroline.

We follow Caroline as she presides over a prickly meeting in Staffordshire, where Ian and Ann have run the branch for 30 years: they're reluctant to shut up shop but have little choice. Elsewhere, we see villagers taking up cudgels against what they see as the death of a way of life. It's a poignant tale about a beloved national network which is facing difficult times.

For nearly 400 years the Post Office has been at the heart of our high streets and the centre of community life, but keeping more than 11,000 Post Offices open has been costing the taxpayer millions, money the Government has said it is no longer prepared to spend. Chief executive Paula Vennells wants to reinvent the business and make it stand on its own two feet, but will progress come at too high a price?
