What happens if a fire started at 2 o clock and half the workforce are still out delivering and half have been back but are still in the building and not signed out yet or are taking their break? Half wouldn't have signed out because they are out on the street and the other half wouldn't have signed out because they haven't finished yet. How would they know who is in the building and who isn't?

They also can ask you to sign out when you depart the building in the morning. Surely if you left the building in the morning and signed that you had left at say 10 o clock then they would be covered.
what happens if you work in a mc then like I do

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Fire regulations have nothing to do with it - fire fighters must sweep the building regardless of who is in there. It does help them to know roughly how many and where they are but they still have to check everywhere else as well.

But if they know everyone is out because all those that have not signed out are present at the roll call, then there is no need for them to waste resoursces of risk lives when there is no need to do so. :hmmmm

What about all those who are still out on delivery? They haven't signed out and they weren't in the building.

From the look of our office signing in sheets ,it would appear to make no difference at all!

Our signing sheet has sections for proceeding to delivery, completeing delivery, return to office and finish time.

Unlikely - it would fall under the "reasonable request" umberalla. Its a reasonable request that you inform the manager, through an agreed process, that you are in or out of the building and working. In RM that process is most often by having a signing in/out sheet in a central location.

And who goes to that sheet as soon as the van comes in rather than going to put bags in yorkies and tracked in another yorkie and letters in another section and specials into callers office etc? Im gonna say very few as much as you may say otherwise.

In Februarys courier someone asked a question about clocking on system and it was answered with the lines that Royal Mail never ask anyone who finishes their delivery away from the office to return purely to sign out and that it doesn't want to run DO's like a factory.

you are probably right, but it doesn't stop it being a reasonable request to do so.

Refusing to do it and not doing it exactly when you should are 2 different issues, and one is certain to be a faster track to dismissal than the other.
