Send in your motions for the CWU Annual conference 2008 to ditch the Political Levy for the so called New Labour Party(Old Tory).

Any CWU member can put forward such a motion but dont foget to sign it and also you will need someone else to second the motion.

Their must be some true CWU Officials out there who could draw up a motion on this Web site for any member to print off and send to
their Branch.

Annual Conferance agrees to cease all politcal levy payments to the Labour Party following the betrayal off all Royal Mail staff in their quest to Privatize Royal Mail.
Annual Conferance also agrees that the Political Levy will only be used to support MPs of any Party who share the hopes and aspirations of CWU Members.

COME ON Lads make some amendments on this site to the motion. Dont let it be ruled out of order by some old fart.

does any union have a strike fund any more?or are they a thing of the past

I believe Unison (Council office workers union) has a strike fund for official strikes, but it is used to control industrial action as they can pull the strike pay on the grounds that it is costing too much, and then members will go back to work.
If we feel strongly enough about an issue, we have to be prepared to lose money, difficult though it might be.

I think it will be good to co-ordinate such a motion for CWU Conference. CWU Branch AGM's are usually held in January, and the motions would have to be submitted in December. The more motions there are from Branches, the more likely they are to be debated by conference. The problem will be that any motion proposing ceasing funding for Labour will probably be opposed by the Engineering Branches (BT and Romec) whose reps and activists seem to support Labour more than we do - though their ordinary members would probably agree with us. And as this would be a Rule Change I believe a two thirds majority would be needed.
So we should also send in Branch motions proposing a ballot of the CWU membership on whether we should cease funding Labour. I don't see how even the most loyal Labour Party members could oppose a democratic vote of the membership, and I think the membership will support ceasing funding to Labour.
And the membership is the supreme decision making forum I believe.

Opting out of the political levy was the first thing I was going to do on returning to work tommorow, New Labour won't get another penny of my money' get rid of Browns clowns then may be we'll get a Labour Party that represents the working man again.

Pointless, vote already promised if regulator is not reformed or removed by 2008 annual confrence.

Its not just national level money goes to labour, affilation fees are paid at local level which in turns alows CWU to send delegates to local labour party meetings with the power to put motions forward and have full voting rights.


How can we influence labour party policy if all we do is chuck money at them but dont exercise our right to participate in the party!


I urge all of you to make contact with your local labour party and make them aware of your views/cwu political thought

Every Constinucey Labour Party can have a trade union liasion officer who would be very happy to listen to cwu members.


I myself am i trade union liasion officer and i am constantly bombarding the members of my CLP with CWU political thought etc.

I doubt it,
He is a control freak who is obsessed with privatization along side with that joke of a Health Minister Alan Johnson and his cronies they want the destruction of both Royal Mail and the CWU.( All Public services will be under threat)

How can Brown take over as Prime Minister? in a democracy their should have been a election not this hand me down clown of a Prime Minister.

But the wheelers and dealers have got their way.

Big Daz - I was a Labour party member, chair of my ward branch, and CWU Branch delegate to the CLP General Management Committee, and my CWU Branch's Political Officer. I did not renew my membership after Blair, Brown and the Parliamentary Labour party backed Bush in his war for oil on Iraq (against the wishes of the majority of Labour Party members).
While I was a member I took every opportunity I could to put forward the CWU's policies on Royal Mail. But the problem is that you can raise issues, pass resolutions, and if you have a decent MP get things raised in Parliament.
But the Government does not take the slightest bit of notice. If you are a rich businessman you can donate a bit of money and get a knighthood, a seat in the Lords, or Government contracts. But the Union which has donated money for years, even when Labour was in opposition, gets ignored and kicked in the teeth.
I admire your dedication and faith that you can achieve something through being involved in the Labour Party machine.
But I'm afraid you will not get anywhere. I felt like I was banging my head against a brick wall, and it felt better when I stopped.
