Haven't met a postie yet that have said it was harder 12-13 years ago. If anything most say they were finished by 11 every day. Couldn't have been that bad.

What has changed is the amount of attendance calls. The job is basically easy no matter when you started. I don't know many people who used to finish by 11 for the simple reason, we had to do two deliveries and we didn't go out on the 2nd till just before 11. Used to actually take longer to ride out and ride back than it did to do the work. Finished by 12 everyday yes. We never had to cut off and rarely anyone booked extended, the job was doable within your duty span, most people enjoyed going to work, there was no pressure. Now it's rush, rush, rush, you feel the pressure, you have specials which have to be done by 1pm which some days is a pain. Imagine doing a rural where you might have to go 40 miles out of your way to deliver a special by 1pm. They need to be seriously redesigned. Next day is good enough. The amount of those we don't deliver, you cannot leave them with neighbours, the customer pays extra to get them there and nobody is in when we arrive. Years ago we hardly left a P739 as most people were still in bed when we got there. The ones you missed were the ones who had gone out on the school run. Modernisation has made the job more difficult than it needs to be.

Where basic pay has risen probably in excess of inflation, overall pay has been eroded by the taking away of other benefits, the main one being D2D payments. The delivery supplement was added to reduce the sour taste of losing D2D payments but in reality it meant a reduction in total pay for most delivery staff. The CWU has done little to enhance pay over the last ten years, but has been great in making you all work much harder (or efficiently as RM & CWU would say) for very little compensation.
basic pay is nearly double now what it was in 2002 ? the cwu have done us proud
If you read what I said, I agree that basic pay has increased. However total pay which originally included D2D money, driving allowances, Saturday premiums and other obscure allowances have been taken away and used to boost the basic pay. However the end result is that total pay has failed to keep pace with inflation. It is the job of the CWU to make sure that pay does at least keep pace with inflation and to make sure that increased produciivity is rewarded. CWU has failed on both accounts and more concerning is that they have failed to protect the delivery staff in respect of health and safety when it comes to the changes in delivery methods.

and you still haven't met one. I didn't say the job was harder, you said part timers now did more than full Timers did back in 2002. I pointed out that the job was different, there was a lot more to do indoor hence we didn't spend as much time on delivery as we do now. Also 5 am start for a 1200 finish (6 days a week) means we were working longer 41.5 hours IIRC.

I can remember 41.5 hour six days a week too but for all the basic wage has risen for most the very fact that management will not pay you working your actual hours you work so they can get themselves and their boss a bonus by bullying the whole office is not what is envisioned as progress in the 21 century!

I have no problem with a £61 bonus if that is what their 'figures' say it should be. I'd just rather they didn't bother announcing it like anyone cared about £61 pro-rata less tax!

It was miles easier.i went full time in 1997,started at 5 out by around 7, back at 9.30 lounge about until the second delivery came at 10.30 that was usually all of ten letters, home for around 11.30 and about £30 a week for leaflets.on saturdays when I wanted to get done,my walk used to take me an hour twenty and I was usually back home for 9. it was six days a week and we used to moan,we never imagined it could have got as hard as it is now.I miss those days.
