"Giant Rats" Stop Postal Deliveries In Croydon

Postmen are refusing to service a street in Norbury because giant rats have been spotted at overflowing bins there.



Royal Mail told people living at a block of flats on the street that they were suspending deliveries until the rubbish was cleared up, after their postman voiced his concerns.

The street is a service road found off the busy London Road.

Residents told the Croydon Guardian that there had been a "plague" of rats on the street for around five years. One local said the rats were "as big as kittens"

Royal Mail said it raised the issue with the local council, businesses and homeowners but nothing was done until they stopped the deliveries. They say the council has now committed to clearing up the street.

A spokesman for the postal service confirmed that as soon as they're "satisfied' the street is clean, the deliveries will begin again.

Ian Clarke, the chairman of the Scots Estate Norbury Residents Association and the Love Norbury group, told the newspaper: “There is a major problem with rats there.

“One of the residents there has got a problem with the rats getting into his car and causing damage by chewing through things."

Think it's more than likely due to the rubbish and filthy conditions (why else would there be rats). Than any fear of being attacked by 'giant rat'.

Don't blame the posties. I refused one house for a few days as they had a gate to the side door which had gravel behind it and they obviously trained their mongrel to cr*p there. I wasn't going to play 'dog-sh!t hopscotch' just to deliver their junk.

Royal Mail is refusing to deliver letters to a south London street - because it has been swamped with rats attracted by mountains of rubbish and rotting food.
Post chiefs allege they had to contact local Croydon Council twice about the issue before even hearing back. They also suggested the affected residents - those living above a parade of takeaways - clear the area themselves, but it is understood little was done. Now they say they won't allow postal workers back into London Road, Streatham, until they are happy it is "free from rats" and there is no longer a risk to their safety. Fourteen houses have now faced a week without letters. Instead, they have been advised to collect all their post from the delivery office - or to have it delivered to a more hygienic street.
London Road's regular postman is understood to have told bosses he was concerned about the road last month, sparking a meeting between Royal Mail and council officers.
Royal Mail spokeswoman Sally Hopkins said: "The road is badly littered with rubbish, which has attracted many rats. We wrote to customers on June 5 to explain this, and to outline alternative ways they could receive their mail in the meantime.

"We originally wrote to customers and contacted the council about our concerns on 20 May 2015 but no action was taken to clear the area. We contacted the Council again on June 1 and it has committed to clean up the road. "Once we are happy this has been done, we will be able to resume deliveries. The safety and welfare of our staff is paramount and we only suspend deliveries if the safety of our postmen and women is at risk and as a last resort." A Croydon Council spokesman said: "This problem has arisen because, despite being warned before, some local shops are still not securing and disposing of their food waste properly, and we’ll serving enforcement notices to make sure this happens in the future. "We are in the process of clearing up the area as a priority and we have also brought in our pest control contractor to get rid of any rats. We have advised traders and local residents not to leave their bins in the service road but on their own properties so that rubbish collections and street cleansing can take place. Those that have acted irresponsibly could be looking at prosecution action or a bill from the council for the clean-up."
