It is also wrong for people with 12 or 13 years in the job who need full time hours but can't do O/T at the drop of a hat because they maybe a carer or have personal commitments get bypassed because a few people are given easy jobs and easy O/T because of office favourtism,I'm not saying that is the case in Corby, but it certainly happens in our DO,i.e bank holiday O/T kept secret, some part timers coming in at 0430 in the morning to unload a lorry for 30 mins and booking right thru till the start of their duty at 0800

Slightly off topic but I do agree with some of DB110's comment.

I heard a junior manager (ex-postie not even substantive) say that it is cheaper to give OT to part timers... When it comes to the payment for work done, the rate of pay is the same for OT regardless of the contractual hours.

Also, because the rate actually comes down after 10 hours above FT hours, the rate might fall quicker for a full timer after doing 10 hours because it will take longer for a 25 hours postie to get to 49 hours. I am not sure?

The point is that there is a misconception amongst some managers that they are better off giving OT to part timers; they might be but the amount paid is not that different. Some managers might feel that the part timers needed the money more than FT and some try to cheat the part timers with hours paid and some find the part timers easier to deal with; for various reasons.

It does not make things right in an office where the OT is not allocated fairly. In my office, there are the go-to part-time OT kings - and the managers sometimes even text them at home before they arrive in the office in situations where someone goes off sick early in the morning. They do this without informing others whether they are interested or not and that appears to be an issue - as DB1100 said, not everyone can do OT at a drop but it appears that once you snooze then you keep losing...

When I was on 30 hours, a manager used to give some 24 hours posties a full week covering for a FT absence even though I might have been interested. But I often get shafted unto another round which nobody knows or wants to do or one that I was on already the week before. And I was a more senior Reserve than the part timer - this could go on for weeks if it is a long term absence or holiday.

On topic: it is good for these guys and their office to stay united and make sacrifices to achieve a good goal. The PT will have been losing out on Holiday pay and sickness pay but not so much on delivery supplement.

It is wrong for the employer to deliberately under staff in this way and they are definitely exploiting the fact that the part timers need the money (in difficult times) and most part timers will be happy to have some money rather than fight management.

On the other hand, this situation could have gone another way: the employer could have taken on more part time staff instead of making more Ft staff... The two situations of under staffing and more part timer staffing is almost now the norm - being made up to full time is almost non existent, these days.

On another note, we do have senior part timers that are quite happy to stay on easier walks and then hoover up the OT; luckily for some of them, most offices are now understaffed, so there is plenty of OT.

We have a couple that refused to be made to temporary Reserve full time but stayed on some of the easiest part time duties in the office - they were senior part timers so had the pick. It has worked well for them as they are getting almost all the OT - their duties are easy, they finish early, the managers rely so much on them that they can name their price (for OT) sometimes. One of them even does the 2 park and loop duties when we are desperate - the Reserves get moved around so that he can do his and partners duty in one go, or he gets the easiest duty on OT - reserves or even junior part time walkholder gets moved off that one!

It is ridiculous that what should be a normal industrial process warrants a 'new topic', but it shows how difficult RM make the whole thing.

Do part-timers get pension contributions from the Royal Mail on the basis of any overtime they do up to full-time hours? If so, then even if they're paying in at the lowest tier (which IIRC gets a 7% contribution from the Royal Mail) it's actually more expensive to give them OT rather than a full-timer!

Assuming my sums are correct then the OT rate for hours 39-49 is £10.77/hour, and (with pension contribution included) the OT rates for part time hours up to 39 is £11.14-35/hour. Obviously the part-timer will only see £10.41/hour on their payslip but the Royal Mail is paying 7/8/9% of their pay into the pension too.

As far as I know a part timer only gets paid normal hours until they have completed 39 hrs and then they go on to over time rate.

That last bit is my argument ChrisJ,In our DO a less enior part timer has been allowed to do the full time part of a park and loop now for 18 months and if anyone of us more senior part timers had been asked we would gladly have done it,but we were not given the chance, this is the trouble and is a sneaky way of management rewarding the brown noses.

Nothing really to add, just to add my support for a job well done. It is just a shame you have to jump through so many hoops to get recognition for what you should already be paid for.

Why cant this part/section of the agenda for growth agreement be put into place/practice in every office, up and down the country?? Its an absolute disgrace & a joke tht the company continues expecting people (& needing people) on part time contracts to work full time hours yet they aren't rewarded with the contracts tht this part of the agreement says they are entitled to. The union shoud be doing so much more to get this enforced.
WHY ISN'T IT???

Excellent news, I believe there should be a rules if anyone work full time hours for more than 6 months should be awarded full time contract automatically. This need to change :)

Hi all!
Any more updates/success stories on this issue of part timers who consistently work full time, gettin made up to permanent full time???
I, along with loads of my part time collegues (25 hr contracts) are stil working 39+ hours a week & getting pestered to work our day off every single week & yet, full timers r leaving (evr), buying down, occasionally sacked but stil we have no hope of getting a contract tht reflects the hours we r working. Is the agreement tht is in place totally pointless/worthless??? Is the agreement on the ratio of 75% ft & 25% pt no longer in place??
Can anybody shed any light please?!?!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

It's a national split,not per office.
