Trowbridge Royal Mail employees take on London night ride for charity

TROWBRIDGE Royal Mail employees are taking part in the Nightrider cycling challenge in London this weekend, which will see them travel 100km through the streets of the capital at night.

Sue Hall, Jim Dobson and Mark Maguire, who are going under the team name Blood, Sweat and Gears, will attempt the unique event in aid of the Stroke Association, which is concerned with combating stroke in people of all ages.

The team decided to raise funds for the Stroke Association as the Royal Mail is in the middle of a two year partnership with the charity, with the aim of raising £2 million to fund grants for 10,000 stroke survivors and their families.

Nightrider takes in over 50 of London’s most famous landmarks, with 3,000 cyclists set to travel through Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf and Trafalgar Square.

Mrs Hall said: “We will start cycling around 10pm and then will power on through the night. It is going to be a big challenge, but we are confident we will be able to do it.

“It will involve travelling 100km of London's streets, passing Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square from Crystal Palace to Alexandra Palace and back again, while London sleeps.

“The wonderful thing is that whatever we raise as individuals will be matched by Royal Mail, so if we raise £400 Royal Mail will also give Stroke Association £400, so altogether with Royal Mail’s matched giving we could be able to raise in the region of £2000 for Stroke Association.”

Mrs Hall said the team has already raised around £800, before including Royal Mail’s matched donation, and is expecting more to come in over the next few days.

They will receive full support, back up and regular break stops throughout the night, as well as a well-earned breakfast and medal at the finish line.
