Chapter 3. Bank holidays on Saturdays as exceptions to the universal service
Introduction
3.1 This chapter deals with Royal Mail's request for an exception to the universal
service on some Saturdays in the UK or parts of the UK in respect of which a bank holiday falls on
an alternate day. The dates that may be affected are:

• 1 January in the UK;

• 2 January (in Scotland only); and

• 26 December in the UK (see chapter 2 for arrangements for 26

December 2009).

3.2 Royal Mail has requested that where the above dates fall on a Saturday but the
Secretary of State has substituted a weekday for the official bank holiday, there will be no
service on the Saturday but that it will provide a normal service on the substituted weekday bank
holiday(Monday)
instead.
3.3 Royal Mail has asked for different arrangements when 12 July (Battle of the Boyne day in
Northern Ireland) falls on a Saturday- see Chapter
4.

So if I am reading that right, the regulator agreed to RM request to allow us to have a Non USO day on the Saturday (Boxing Day) but we would be expected to work the following Monday instead!! This was agreed back in 2009 so may have been superceded. If not according to the RM website only the bank holidays are a non USO day so Friday and Monday. Maybe RM forgot that it made this request in 2009!! To be fair they did add an extra exception that year that gave us the Saturday and Monday off.

We will have to wait and see if RM make an application to do the same this year.
