And how did we recover?
Simple answer - Windrush
Well you would be simple if anyone thought that was the answer. People from the commonwealth came to the UK after the war to help rebuild and yes re-populate but it took hard work and austerity to recover and not solely the response from the commonwealth, who I might add were British in the main because they were commonwealth citizens. We also had an industrial manufacturing base which obviously had to be re-geared for peaceful purposes and consequently there was ample work for everyone, as well as the rebuilding of homes destroyed in the bombing raids.

Just how many West Indians came over? And what jobs were they doing? This is the sort of argument that annoys some Brits - it is as if, people in this country are not capable of doing much on their own.

Its like some people continually arguing that the Eastern Europeans are harder and better workers that the Brits - a very simplistic and broad generalisations that does not account for the fact that the Brits still make up the majority in UK; and they do clean toilets, do some plumbing, drive buses, pick fruits, do security work, work in bars and all those type of jobs that people say the Brits are not ready to do - just because they are too proud, too lazy or will rather claim benefits - poppy-cock!

Are those people who are in favour of "controlled immigration" also in favour of controlled emigration.
After all, why should someone who has had their education paid for by the state be allowed to go and work abroad?

Just after World War II ended in 1945, the first groups of Britain’s post-war Caribbean immigrants settled in London. There were an estimated 492 passengers (and one stowaway) on the SS Empire Windrush. These passengers settled in the area of Brixton which is now a prominently black district in Britain. From the 1950s into the 1960s there was a mass migration of workers from all over the English-speaking Caribbean, particularly Jamaica, who settled in Britain. These immigrants were invited to fill labour requirements in London’s hospitals, transportation venues and railway development. They are widely viewed as having been a major contributing factor to the rebuilding of the post-war urban London economy.

It is estimated that half a million blacks and Asians came to Britain in the 50s.

The major examples of official government recruitment schemes were firstly a group of 1,200 British Hondurians who were recruited to fell timber in Scotland. Secondly, about 1,000 West Indian technicians and trainees who were recruited for service in munitions factories in Merseyside and Lancashire. Thirdly, 10,000 West Indians were recruited for service in the Royal Air Force to work in Britain as ground crews. Finally, thousands of colonial seamen were either recruited or voluntarily enlisted in the Merchant Navy.

I'm not sure I understand your logic mother, would that apply for people employed by UK firms who worked abroad on behalf of their parent company? My brother worked in many overseas countries on defence projects but was employed by an international company. What cost to this country is someone emigrating and would those people be entitled to unemployment benefits, family allowance and housing benefit should they become unemployed or indeed go without a job.

I recently read that in order to build the number of houses required Britain would need an extra 30 000 bricklayers.
As it stands any qualified bricklayer can pick up his trowel and his spirit level and go and work abroad - in Marseilles or Berlin or wherever the work and the fancy takes him.
In your Brave New World of controlled immigration, would he banned from emigrating?

So turn that daft logic around the other way, and ask how many brickies have gone to work in Poland, Ireland, Portugal or the Ukraine?
Hmmm, not such a level playing playing field, then.
Who's proposing banning emigration? Anyone?

Well no. What I would do is cancel all these half arsed degrees in feck all and train people to be brick layers, plumbers, plasterers - emigration and immigration are two different subjects - have you never heard of the brain drain where the brightest and best were recruited mostly to America - did we stop them - NO and nor would I. I just don't want our borders to be open to all and sundry at someone else's behest anyone can leave if they wish, they just can't come in.

Don't know who he is but his sources are YouGov and Ipsos Mori.
What, the two stats-gatherers (particularly YouGov) who got the general election result so spectacularly wrong?
Oh yes, clearly they can be trusted to accurately number-crunch. :left:
