CWU responds to Whistl suspending delivery services

Dave Ward, CWU general secretary-elect, said: "Our first reaction to this news is concern for the workers who have lost their jobs.

This is of course a difficult time for them and their families and, coming less than six months after City Link folded, is the most recent effect of a crowded post and logistics market.

"Ofcom needs to pay attention to the impact of competition in the postal market which is not only causing job losses but playing a leading role ‎in driving terms and conditions downwards.

"The sad truth is if Whistl had been successful then it would have been at the expense of even more job losses in Royal Mail and the end of six-days-a-week deliveries to 29 million UK addresses. Ofcom must understand that promoting this model of competition in a declining letters market does not benefit workers, business or the public."

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Excellent statement from David. Let's not forget this puts 2k people who were on s**t conditions anyway back on the dole. It also is an example of how having staff on ZERO HOURS contracts makes is very easy for companies to wind down and sack them all with no payoffs. Disgusting.

Hopefully Royal Mail will be able to employ these already trained 2000 staff to help with the increased work loads.

Not a chance. They believe that those who are left can carry the burden on even less hours than they are doing now. Unreal.

We don't want any of their workers. These people don't give a s**t about customer service. They're nowhere near trained to our level, stuff would end up nicked/missing/broken. You might as well not bother with stage warnings cos they would be out the door after a few weeks. And hey why don't we give e'm zero hour contracts cos that's what there used to. Royal Mail must be rubbing their hands on this well it's time now for Big Dave to stand up and tell Royal Mail we don't f***ing want them and we ain't doing no dodgy deal :nana :nana :nana

Like any company there are always bad apples amongst the good ones (our office has 3 or 4), but the TNT lad who I saw regularly was a nice bloke,
he didn't mind his zero hour contract because he got Saturdays off so he could see his lad, we always had a natter about how much mail we both had.
I hope people like him get straight back into work & get employed by a decent employer & not a predator like whistl.

Most large firms have a similar mix and whilst some RM workers saw only a potential threat to their own job security the Whistl employees were just workers like anyone else. There were well publicised instances of mail being dumped and poor service but then that happens everywhere .... aside from their rubbish terms and conditions I doubt whether their training amounted to much and they certainly had nowhere near the job security that many of us take for granted.
