Royal Mail says 'sorry' after Greens leaflets end up in bin

It’s every candidate’s worst nightmare . . . not getting their election message across.

But one man chasing a Westminster seat in tomorrow’s Parliamentary poll has been left in no doubt thousands in his constituency have no idea what he stands for.

We are resigned to the fact most people won’t have read what we are all about by the time they go to the polls on Thursday.

Green Party candidate Phil Chandler’s hopes of making an impact in Morecambe and Lunesdale could already be in the bin after bundles of his campaign leaflets were found dumped in Lancaster.

Now the Royal Mail, employed to deliver the election address to homes across the constituency, has issued an “unreserved” apology to Mr Chandler for letting him down.

“It’s a bit late - the election is Thursday,” said Rebecca Lovell, a spokesman for the Green Party in the constituency. “It would appear a large number of people in this constituency haven’t received our leaflet. There’s no way we can get round them all now.”

The Greens were relying on the freepost leaflet delivery which every General Election candidate is allowed to reach the parts its foot soldiers couldn’t. But, while it appears the leaflets of the other parties made it through the area’s letter boxes, many of Phil Chandler’s were dumped on land in the Newlands area of Lancaster and ended up in a wheelie bin. He said: “As a political party without the vast funding that other parties have, the freepost leaflet is an important democratic opportunity to put across to every household that we are standing in the elections and that we offer an exciting alternative vision for this beautiful and environmentally important part of the country.”

Mr Chandler met with Royal Mail bosses yesterday in an attempt to find out what went wrong. He was horrified to learn that, on top of those dumped in the Newlands area of Lancaster, 40 per cent of his election pamphlets were still at the sorting office and hadn’t yet been delivered.

Rebecca said: “We have no idea exactly how many of our leaflets were dumped.

“We are resigned to the fact most people won’t have read what we are all about by the time they go to the polls on Thursday. We accept we are not going to win the seat, but we were confident we were making good progress.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said “The security of mail is our utmost priority and we are very concerned that a number of election leaflets from the Green Party have not been delivered. Royal Mail is investigating this as a matter of urgency. We apologise unreservedly for this delivery failure and to local residents for any inconvenience.”

Disgusting , lazy people who get paid extra for delivering election material put all our jobs at risk for failing to do their job. Find them and sack them. At the next election it could be the competition delivering them! And more jobs lost!

In my area the Greens, UKIP, Labour and TUSC all delivered extra ones themselves, or gave them to local leaflet delivery companies on one occasion. I think competition is already here, which is why the move to equalise payments across the UK may well end up as a replay of D2D winners and losers scenario if successful.

There is a picture on the LEP website that apparently shows the wheelie bin which looks like it's round the side or back of the house. The leaflets seem to be with other d2ds together with a Daily Mail and an empty fag packet !! In my humble opinion it is highly unlikely that they have been put there by a Royal Mail employee more like the householder (who doesn't know how to recycle) or maybe a Green Party foot soldier. How were they found ?? Had someone been scratting through all the bins in the area ?? What's this Freepost delivery, I can't see the Royal Mail delivering anything for nothing. There are too many anomalies in this report for me. Why always blame the Royal Mail without concrete proof. Let's fight back !! .....Rant over.

where did I say rm are the sole distrbutors.. to lose even one party to a rival means a loss of revenue and we all know what happens when a business starts to lose revenue.
