Germany Loses EU Top Court Case Over Aid to Deutsche Post

Germany lost a challenge by European Union regulators at the bloc’s highest court over its failure to recoup unlawful state aid from Deutsche Post AG.

The EU Court of Justice ruling in Luxembourg on Wednesday is binding.

Shares of Deutsche Post fell as much as 1.3 percent in Frankfurt trading before recovering. The shares traded at 29.02 euros apiece at 9:50 a.m., down 0.1 percent on the day.

The European Commission sued Germany in 2013 for failing to comply with an earlier order to recover aid that had given Deutsche Post “an undue economic advantage over competitors.”

Deutsche Post has said that the government had asked it to repay 298 million euros ($335 million). EU regulators had estimated the repayment at 500 million euros to 1 billion euros.
