VANDALS in Dunfermline have been targeting Post Office vehicles, smashing the windscreens of three delivery vans in the past week.

The yobs went for vans parked at the back of Asda St Leonards, used by the Woodmill Street branch, between Saturday and Tuesday and caused considerable damage to the screens.

Garry Haldane, Communication Workers Union (CWU) rep, said the problem has got worse with the lighter evenings.

“We didn’t have any problems over the winter until this week,” he said. “Once the lighter nights come in, the vandalism gets worse, with people hanging around and drinking.”

The destruction not only costs the Post Office to repair the windscreens but also in hiring out replacement vehicles, and has a knock-on effect on the business.
“It comes at some expense,” continued Garry. “We need vans for delivery and we're struggling to get hire vans in. It does have an impact on the working day.
“I’d just ask people to keep an eye out and report anything suspicious.”

Police Scotland confirmed they were following up enquiries and CCTV footage and are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 101.

Posties were forced to use the land at the back of Asda to park vans after Fife Council barred goods vehicles using the Dunfermline rail station car park, previously used by Royal Mail workers as it’s next to the sorting office on Woodmill Street.

Yes, Royal Mail don't seem to appreciate what a favour we're doing them, not just providing FREE overnight parking but also using a safe private drive.
If they weren't so mean I'm sure they'd pay us an allowance for overnight retention.
