A Derry postal worker is due to appear at the city Magistrates Court this morning charged with stealing the contents of parcels.

The 35-year-old, from the Waterside area of the city, faces a total of four charges of theft and interfering with mail.

The charges relate to the theft of two video games from parcels that were in transmission by post.

The offences are alleged to have occurred on 6 November last year.

A postman has been charged with interfering with post.

Jamie Hodgson, of Seventree Road, Kilfennan, is accused of being a postal operator interfering with mail.

The 34-year-old is further charged with stealing two PS4 games.

The offences were allegedly committed on November 6, last year.

He did not appear at the local magistrate’s court for the brief hearing.

A defence solicitor applied for the case to be adjourned for a short period.

Hodgson is to appear in court on May 13.

A former postman who admitted stealing post has received a suspended sentence. Jamie Hodgson, of Seventree Road, Kilfennan, pleaded guilty to the theft of two video games and interfering with mail. The offences were committed on November 16, last year.

Derry Magistrates Court heard the 35-year-old lost his job as a postman as a result of the offences.

According to the charge sheet, he stole two Playstation 4 games belonging to an ‘unknown person’.

Defence counsel Eoghan Devlin said this was a ‘very serious breach of trust case’.

However, he said Hodgson had been an ‘exemplary member of society’ up until he committed these offences.Mr Devlin told the court the 35-year-old was ‘under an exceptional amount of financial pressure’ at the time.

He added that his client has found another full time job and has dealt with his issues. The barrister urged the court to give Hodgson ‘one chance’. Suspending a five month sentence for two years, District Judge Barney McElholm said ‘a serious breach of trust case would ordinarily attract an immediate custodial sentence’.

However, he said ‘I don’t see what would be served by sending him to prison. He will lose his employment 
and become another member of the ranks of unemployed and maybe unemployable. That is neither going to do him, his family or wider society any good’.

The judge also order Hodgson to complete 120 hours community service
