Police warn elderly about dangers of postal scams

Police officers across the Midlands have been out in force in local post offices, warning elderly people about the dangers of postal scams.

Working alongside anti-scam charity Think Jessica, officers have been speaking to post office customers about the tricks fraudsters use to leech money from their bank accounts with fake lottery win claims, promises of messages from clairvoyants, shares in fake businesses and more.

The Think Jessica campaign was started by Jessica’s daughter Marilyn Baldwin in 2007 after five years of struggling to find help for her mother.

Her aim was to educate others about the powerful psychology criminals use to trap their targets and make them understand how this is strong enough to turn them against their loved ones and those trying to help them.

"Think Jessica is a charity aimed at protecting elderly and vulnerable people from scams which come through the postal system and criminals who contact them by telephone.

"We were asking people to take a booklet to give to elderly friends or family and help spread the word."
