No 'normal' post service for a week

Royal Mail services will not return to normal for at least a week, despite a breakthrough in the worst strike for nearly 20 years, the post watchdog has said.

Royal Mail and the CWU have agreed to reform so-called called 'Spanish practices'

The news comes as the 15-strong executive of the Communications Workers Union meets in south London today to consider the "terms of agreement" deal hammered out with managers late on Friday night.

Experts reckon there are still around 30 million letters and parcels stuck in the postal service. Hospital appointments and blood supplies are among services which have been affected by the strikes.

Yesterday, Postwatch, the consumer watchdog, warned that the backlog would mean services will not be back to normal until next week, at the earliest.

The row was about pay, pensions and changes to working practices. Neither Royal Mail nor the CWU would comment on the new terms. Both are likely to claim victory when details are made public today.

The Daily Telegraph understands the CWU has won a 6.7 per cent pay rise until March 2008. This, in practice, is 2.5 per cent for the current financial year, with the same in 2007/8, including benefits, aggregated to 6.7 per cent.

Both sides have agreed to reform what Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier had called "Spanish practices", including inflexible working patterns. There is also agreement on pensions.

How does 2.5% in each of 2 years (if you go april 07 - 09) average out at 6.7%? Is the £175 included in that calculation? Scary to think I Used to be good at maths
