Parcel deliveries blamed as Royal Mail promise to address van parking problems in Radstock

The postal company has promised to find a solution after concerns were raised by businesses in the town over vans parking in the public spaces along The Street and Fortescue Road.

Greengrocer Shane Kitchen said he had to turn away a delivery of potatoes after the driver was unable to find somewhere to park.

Other businesses in the town have also spoken of problems faced by customers trying to park in the town in the early mornings.

The issue has come about because of changes to the delivery service at the Royal Mail sorting office in Radstock that came into effect in February last year. Ten new vans were brought in to help keep up with the demand for parcel deliveries which meant they could no longer all fit in the company's sorting office car park on Fortesque Road.

Until November, Royal Mail vans were using the car park next to the Victoria Hall but the postal service began having problems when the car park closed to accommodate the Norton Radstock Regeneration development.

Around 15 vans have been parking in the town centre between 6am and 9.30am when they are returned to the sorting office by members of staff who take then home with them at the end of their shift.

This has been the cause of concern for traders who say everyone should obey the 30 minute parking restrictions that are in force every Monday to Saturday from 8am.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We apologise to customers who have been inconvenienced by Royal Mail vans parked in Radstock town centre. Royal Mail is now using more vans because we deliver more parcels and fewer letters than previously.

"At the same time, parking space has reduced due to recent buildings development in Radstock town centre. We are liaising with Bath and North East Somerset council to resolve this issue as quickly as possible."
