NOT writing house number on turned letter. (MY solution if no mail is this: say you have a packet for 20 and no letter, but a letter for 19, I write '19' in brackets on back of letter and '20' next to it. This signifies turned letter is for 19 but packet for 20.)
NOT putting largest flat/letter at back of mail for that particular address. If D2D they should always go at back.

Such a simple solution. I used to do that when I was on deliveries, although I did put P/20, or SP/20, RD/20. It took seconds and saved so much aggro when out.

When I started 15 years ago I was told to put d2ds at the back, unless you had a flat for that address, then flat went at the back.

Ah the old days, when the senior men actually (had the time to?)passed on their experience.

I like to use a 739 docket to indicate packets. This has the added advantage that if I forget to take any out with me (Our Office covers 5 Collection Points with different addresses, so you try not to keep any in your pocket to avoid cock ups) you know you're going to have a docket available. Also helps on a busy day if you run out.

Recently I've added a further step. If it's a van duty, and there's a LARGE parcel, I'll fold the corner of the 739 over. When I arrive at the address I don't need to check the parcel back as I know it's in the van and will need dropping of later. This also helps if I've not covered the Duty much and can't picture exactly where that address is.

Hope this helps someone....I'm always nicking good ideas if helps me out on Delivery :thumbup

Where in writing is it banned?
And why?

I dunno where it is in writing, but the reason is that when prepping a bundle for someone else, there were incidences of people coming to the EO with a blank card or one with a house number only on it as it was posted accidentally with their mail. Understandably they made complaints for a wasted trip to the EO despite the card being blank as they didn't understand what had happened, although it was obvious to the guy in the EO.

Banned! Sledgehammer and a nut...

Yes, sometimes an empty P739 card might be delivered but it should be rare as the postie is supposed to check the mail before posting; moreover the card should always be the first card for the property with a parcel.

Even when an empty card is put through, it is not the worst thing in the world except if it is put in the wrong house and customer comes calling for a parcel...

I suppose it is unnecessary to the card but I do not like turning letters for other properties to indicate a parcel for a property without mail.

It is actually more of a time saver for me - as I can start sorting the parcels as I go along without having to wait until the end to turn letters; sometimes I do a full parcel bag the first thing as soon as I come in. And when I had to double-prep for posties that do not turn for parcel, I tend to do the parcels for the partner as soon as I can or before they come in...

No one's ever told us it's banned. Probably just a local thing. Admittedly I've sometimes popped a blank 739 through. It's not normally the house that's got the parcel, it's when I've slipped the 739 to the back of the bundle after delivering the parcel and then forgot when I posted the last letter! :d'oh!

This is normally solved because the customer will phone up and say, "I've had a card put through my letterbox do I have a parcel to collect"? PHG will then ask if it's blank and if the customer says it is he just tells them to ignore it (because he knows I'm an idiot) I know customers are stupid as well, how many times have you used a 739 to write "Parcel left in Garage etc"? As you're walking away down the road they'll come bursting out of their front door in their Dressing Gown (If you're lucky), "Hang on..Wait Postie...I'm in"! Then I go into a Mime act of telling them to read the card, because I'm too far away for them to hear me...AND I'm too bloody idle to walk all the way back there! :dance

Theres one guy that has done it to all his bags, I've mentioned to him and he kinda agrees with me and doesn't know why he does it

I've worked in offices where people bundle up their own loops. Saves loads of aggro.

Posted a blank P739 yesterday! Then another with "please ignore blank card I posted by mistake on it", along with the two small jiffy packets for the address. Must have been having a senior moment there! :left:
