What's the next step in C&L's 'Master Plan'?

Post by wabbithunta »

Isn't it amazing now that those sitting up in their "Ivory Towers" (I'll not say their names :lfo :cfo as I'll have to wash my mouth out with soap and water afterwards, and I'm getting ticked off with doing so :mad ) have nearly reached an agreement with the CWU that all the details are being published, or rather being made public.
Do you think that this could be, by any chance, tied in with the wildcat strikes and local disputes around the country? Also the fact that we've been 'bombing' businesses and the public, over the past few days, with leaflets from the CWU over the reasons we're on strike?
As no details were really given by any of the news media as to why we were on strike. Apart from a few reports in some papers, some really good ones but in the main most seemed to be 'propaganda' reports from RM. In the main it was posties around the country letting the public know as to why we were in dispute.

Management were only interested in saying 'we're losing money/business to the competition because of this action'. Sod that! We still have to deliver their mail. Have you seen DHL/TNT/Business Post et al on any delivery, apart from dropping of business mail to a few assorted Co's. in major cities/towns. I don't think even the public realised who was dropping the mail through their doors, until it was pointed out to them. (RM should have these letters franked with 'Delivered by Royal Mail', maybe that'll make people realise what we have to put up with.) Also they were the ones who put forward 'Job and Done' as part of the previous pay deal and now they whinge about it.... 'We only want a fair days work for a fair days pay.'
Last week my office let us out at 9:30am, it takes me at least 15mins, on a good day, to get to my start point. I eventually got to my start point at 10am! I had 5 bags of mail to deliver... I returned with 1 full bag! Lo and behold a pile of bags elsewhere in the office where others had cut off as well! Everyday so far there have been bags returned due to cutting off. Good!!

As it stands reports on BBC News24 state that the offer on the table is 6.9% over 2 years with a lump sum of £175. Local agreements to be used/implemented with regard to flexible working. The pension scheme to be closed to new members. Nothing else mentioned at present. This could all go down the pan if wildcat strikes continue. Is this a threat from C&L or just badly worded on the news?
So voting, no doubtedly, will be carried out over the coming week with results given next week. It'll be interesting to see what the reaction to flexiblity will be, as no doubt that will be a big problem....

So far this action has mirrored results in my old job, with regard to WTL and how things have transpired, my old job called this Continous Improvement... we called it Continous Disprovement.
Therefore the next step in this should be, or rather will be, monthly pay? RM will no doubt want to implement this by March 2008, so they can start the new financial year with propaganda over profits/losses etc, with regard to bonuses.
In my last job (prior to the site being closed down.... doesn't sound good this does it?) everyone from directors to cleaners were made redundant, and everything (machinery etc being moved up North. My old company offered us monthly pay with the following to be implemented, upon agreement the deal being accepted.
If I recall correctly it was bi-weekly pay for 6 months, then monthly pay implemented there after. The offer had a payment of £50 'as a carrot' for acceptance. Upon acceptance they then split the monthly payments throughout the Co. by paying everyone either on the 15th or the 28th of the month. After that, about 18months to 2yrs later we got hit by the news that they were going to shut the local site down with the loss of 280-300 jobs!

Monthly Pay...

Post by wabbithunta »

Joint Working Group 2 – New Reward Framework will examine pay simplification possibilities (within the existing pay bill), a new pay and reward package, different pay models, reviewing on what the local element of the ColleagueShare dividend for years 2 and 3 will be based and MTSF. The Group will also consider how to implement monthly pay. It will also review annualised hours or banked hours, flexible working, and possible changes to attendance patterns that could both benefit the business and employees and is in line with the company’s family-friendly policy. The group will decide whether it needs to operate sub groups for any element of this.

There it is, Monthly pay...........! Tucked away right at the back of the document.

http://www.cwu.org/news.asp?step=3&NID=1856

Don't let them (RM) fool you with this document. It's riddled with so many 'traps' and loopholes you could drive through it!
If you do read this, then download it to do so, I suggest that you read it very carefully as it will come back to bite you big time of you accept this proposal. Ask your union rep if you have any questions about this document. Think long and hard before you vote on this document/offer.

Personally I don't have a problem with monthly pay as I was on monthly pay at my previous job, as I've said before, but if they want me to go over to it then they can give me 'small payment' to do this. (nothing is free in life.... So you scratch my back :cfo and :lfo and I may do likewise (as if!). As for the rest of the document/offer I'm reading it thoroughly to see what effect it will be likely to on me and also what effect it will have locally. As it seems that most things will, or could be on a 'local level.' Flexibilty is such a divisive word and can be used in literally any part of the job, if this offer is accepted.
We negotiated a deal to go over to monthly pay and we got a 'small'(?) payment for doing so. Somehow I can't see RM doing this, paying everyone on weekly pay a lump sump to transfer to monthly pay would be a bit of a payout for them and RM won't have any money left in the pot to do so I bet!
It's simply a matter of time before they push this through, as any new starters will be put on monthly pay as a part of their contracts, if/when RM implement this.

Wabbihunta,

I appreciate your mistrust of RM, and you probably have some reasonable examples as to why this is the case. I can only give you a perspectice of both an RM Manager and a so-called bureaucrat who worked in RM Ivory Towers.

Weekly pay is hugely time consuming and costs a lot of money to process. There are 1,000-2,000 people working on payroll alone in RM. To process 150,000 paychecks each week is one of the largest logisitcal support operations in the company.

If you moved to monthly pay this operation would be cut down by a quarter and free up time and money. Ultimately this would mean less jobs in payroll, and possibly less indoor staff rolls at a local level (though that is an educated guess rather than backed-up factually).

Should posties share in this move? Possibly so, but then again what is the sacrifice you are making directly to this? I would argue that the Employee reward scheme would take some of these savings and contribute them to you.

I am curious to know the negative impacts of moving from weekly pay, not that I can do much with it these days, but it was a topic I looked at briefly when working for RM.

With regard to the weekly or monthly pay debate, savings could be achieved simply by issuing printed pay slips on a monthly basis yet continuing to pay workers every week by electronic bank transfer. Working hours have to be logged in the same way however often workers are paid. I would think that this is the main role of payroll workers unless RM IT is in need of modernisation, and the proposed flexible working will certainly increase the time that will be needed for this task. Therefore it will be necessary to free up some extra working time to cope with that. The IT setup should be capable of ensuring that electronic payments are calculated and made automatically, each week, without human intervention. A printed, 4-weekly summary could then be sent out to each worker; four payslips combined into one.

Without question going to monthly pay will save RM loadsa money. I don`t see a problem with that if they use a decent amount of that as a one-off lump sum payment before converting to monthly pay. Looks like we have no choice in this if the deal is accepted.

monthly pay is a bad idea,i mean they f**k up our wages on a weekly basis as it is,f**k waiting round for another month to get back what they didnt pay you..its gonna be a nightmare...
