If the office has voted to split the meal relief, then that is what happens.
Write to the HSE, write to your rep, write to your Branch, write to the Pope if you like, it won't make any difference.
If he office has voted to split the break 20/20 with the final 20 minutes at the end, you do not have a legal entitlement to take the full 40 minutes in one go because you do not have a LEGAL ENTITLEMENT to a 40 minute break.

The legal requirement is to provide a 20 minute meal relief roughly in the middle of the duty.
That is all the WTR provides for. And it doesn't have to be a paid break by law.

The rest of the 40 minute paid meal relief we enjoy Is down to collective bargaining and is decided as part your revision process.
Those of you who think it Is all a matter of individual whim clearly have no understanding of what collective bargaining is.
Regardless of what is legal or not in my office wee start at 6:45 at 8 they call 20 minutes break then expect you to take your other 20 at the end of your day this is just not right and needs to be looked as this job is to physical now to have a break 1 hour and 15 minutes into your dutie then work the rest of the day. This needs to be looked at even more in the summer when wee should be having are full break in the middle of the day to protect us from the dangers of being in the sun at the hottest part of the day! But that's a whole different subject :-)

How has this got out of hand, did anyone see Fish's post?

The timing of meal relief is part of the revision process and as such down to local agreement, If the office has agreed to split the 40 min break that's what happens.
There is no breach of the working time regulations as long as there is scope to take 20 mins "roughly" in the middle of your working day and by roughly I mean very roughly.

If on the other hand the revision allows for taking the full 40 mins and the manager has changed this to suit himself I would certainly raise a grievance and continue to take my full meal relief.
So what exactly is the problem?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I do work in delivery I also know what the law actually is. You do realise you are saying that working for 4 and half hours with out a break is a major h and s issue. Well sorry if it was that major then the law wouldn't be that you are not entitled to a break till you work a six hour shift

Regardless swearing at me is not on DONOT DO IT AGAIN especially as you asked for advice and I am only giving you the correct legal situation regardless of whether you like the answer or not

copied and pasted form gov.uk

1. Overview
Workers over 18 are usually entitled to 3 types of break - rest breaks at work, daily rest and weekly rest.

Rest breaks at work
Workers have the right to one uninterrupted 20 minute rest break during their working day (this could be a tea or lunch break), if they work more than 6 hours a day.

Daily rest
Workers have the right to 11 hours rest between working days, eg if they finish work at 8pm, they shouldn’t start work again until 7am the next day.

Weekly rest
Workers have the right to either:

an uninterrupted 24 hours without any work each week
an uninterrupted 48 hours without any work each fortnight
A worker’s employment contract may say they’re entitled to more or different rights to breaks from work.

Work that puts health and safety at risk
An employer should give an employee enough breaks to make sure their health and safety isn’t at risk if that work is ‘monotonous’ (eg work on a production line).

Domestic workers in a private house (eg a cleaner or au pair) aren’t entitled to rest breaks for health and safety reasons.

in red Our union has negotiated this nationally so locally our union cannot negotiate anything lesseror worse.
in blue, well this might provoke some discussions at work :nana :nana :nana
