North Wootton villagers fight to save long-serving postwoman

VILLAGERS in North Wootton are fighting a move which could see their much-loved postie forced to change rounds.

Claire Connock has delivered post to houses in the village for seven years.

But due to rules made by Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union, she could lose her route to a more senior colleague.

Fiona Kirton, who has lived in the village for 16 years, said: “We have Claire, our postwoman, who is very good, everyone likes her.

“Someone from Bath who had quite a big round wants to take over the round, so she is having to leave and we are not very happy about it.

“She is very popular and goes beyond the call of duty. She does a really good job.

“She is really good at parcels, making sure people get them.

“She knows exactly which neighbours know which so knows which door to knock on to leave it with if someone is out.

“We feel she shouldn’t have to leave because someone else takes over.”

A Royal Mail spokesman confirmed that the Shepton Mallet office had voted to have a ‘re-pick’ of routes.

He said: “Any changes in North Wooton will not be introduced for another two months approximately.

“The delivery round re-picks are assigned on seniority, so the most senior person has the first pick, and so on down this list.”

People in the village have started an online petition to try to keep Claire, and have written to the Post Office.

Postie Claire is being replaced by another Postie who wants her round. The Union policy is that if a longer serving member of staff wants to change rounds they can force the existing Postie to move. This is unfair and as stakeholders in the postal service we want to keep Claire as she is efficient, friendly and often goes beyond the call of duty as a member of our local community.We object to her being forced to move rounds.

No, I meant well done for getting over losing her round of 13 years and carrying on with another.

This is not even the typical unfairness that surrounds 'seniority'! If there is a re-pick then there has to be a way of allocating rounds/posts - whichever way RM/CWU/Office chooses will still result in some posties having to move rounds.

Claire had only been on the round for 7 years, what happened to the postie that was on there before?

Claire should really be asking the villagers not to sign a petition on her behalf - it does her no favours with anyone within the establishment... Just say to the people - that is the way it is!
