GS represents the entire union LJ, All members from BT to the few we have at UK Mail, it's nonsense to believe that he could effectively lead negotiations with Royal Mail and play all of other roles involved in the political pantomime that GS brings. If I was a telecoms member I certainly wouldn't want a GS who spent all of his time looking after the interests of RM members so some compromises would have to be made. The truth is the role Billy has turned GS into is pretty much what it should be...mostly ceremonial.
What we should be doing is making the DGS(P) position more politically effective, allowing Dave to try to control everything from the GS position will just undermine whoever holds the DGS(P) job and weaken the overall position of postal members.

Dave has been leading the negotiations and has fronted in the media during his spell as DGS, as for the political profile, you may pardon me for thinking that having a political presence hasn't exactly been in our favour. Did I see any will at all to fight privatisation, NO other than a bus ride round London, then it was roll over and tickle belly time. The union needs to be overhauled because there are far too many self servers in prominent positions and the support at grass roots level is practically non-existent.
I have absolute faith that Dave will bring a huge improvement to the ineptness of the T&FS side of the CWU. Breath of fresh air to the GS role. Need someone who puts the CWU first. Not a person who puts the Labour Party foremost.

The Education and Training department are keen to promote succession planning to reps when on courses, I would hope that is applied to national officer roles just as much as it is encouraged for branch officers.

South Londoner Dave started work as a messenger boy at Tooting Delivery Office back in 1976, becoming Tooting Branch secretary six years later and then holding the same post in London South West Branch from 1992.
After a year as London regional secretary, Dave was elected as one of the CWU's two divisional representatives for the capital in 1996 and he served in that position until being voted onto the postal executive council in 2000.
Dave succeeded Billy Hayes as outdoor secretary in 2001 and then two years later, he stood for, and was elected to the post of DGSP.
