Thieves snatch jewellery from Royal Mail van in Leeds

Tens of thousands of pounds worth of jewellery was stolen from a Royal Mail delivery van while it was parked up in Leeds.

Thieves snatched a number of bags from the back of the van after it was left unattended on King Street in the city centre.

This theft took place at a busy time of day in the city and it is likely it may have been witnessed.

Jewellery and watches in the bags were due to be sent away to specialists for alterations or repair work.

The owner of one of the stolen watches today told the Yorkshire Evening Post that police working on the case had informed him the van had visited around half-a-dozen jewellery stores prior to the theft.

One of the stores alone had items taken that were valued at an estimated £17,000, said the man, who asked not to be named.

He also said he had been told, again by the police, that the van had only been left in King Street because a bus was occupying a parking spot on Wellington Street.

West Yorkshire Police have issued an appeal for information about the incident, which happened between 4.25pm and 5pm last Tuesday, March 3.

They are also urging people to be on their guard if they are offered items of jewellery for sale in “suspicious circumstances”.

Det Insp Ian Lawrence said: “This theft took place at a busy time of day in the city and it is likely it may have been witnessed.

“I would like to speak to anyone who perhaps witnessed this offence or has been offered jewellery for sale in suspicious circumstances in the past few days.”

Royal Mail spokeswoman Ronit Wolfson said: “The safety and security of mail is of the utmost importance to this business and Royal Mail is working closely with the police to investigate this incident.”

So a considerable value in one van but how well known was that locally ?

collections are on schedule every day at the same time wouldnt be hard to notice surely they should have the cash collectors going to jewellers after this incident

Thieves are pretty sophisticated these days, you can intercept the wireless transmission of the keyfob and retransmit it to unlock the vehicle. Not saying this happened but a possibility.
