Rather than reducing to 5 delivery days per week, which would cost ~16% of the current jobs, what if we all had our contract hours reduced to the equivalent of 7 hour days?

Some full timers have been striving for 35 hour weeks for years!

If RM really believe they can save hours because of changes happening throughout the country, get them to put money where there mouth is...
Small scale buy downs to lower contract hours
Much better overtime incentives for when 7 hours is not enough eg. at least 125% contract hourly wage

RM get their savings if they really are there; when overtime is justified we are rewarded better than present; far fewer jobs lost (and far less redundancy money paid out); RM keeps more of its most experienced OPGs.

A few (taxable) grand to take a 10% pay cut?
I can't see that being popular.

1, Start by scrapping first/second class, would save a ton of money/time segregating mail, only have a universal service.

2, Keep six day a week deliveries, but houses only get mail every second day in a rolling pattern, e.g. Mon/Weds/Fri/ - Tues/Thu/Sat so on.

You reduce the man power needed as you could half the walks that go out the office in any one day, you increase efficiency by only visiting an address with 2 days worth of mail.

3, Introduce a Sunday packet service to satisfy customer demands.

If RM did this the share price would rocket.

That is getting on for 50% of delivery staff out of a job.

So everybody on deliveries would be part time
Suppose this is the natural progression from a 5 day week.
Its all about the share price :pray
This ain't no baseball game, you get only one chance and you blew it.

The business needs to lean up, letters are declining year on year. Not having as many staff walking means a surplus can take on packets the growing side.

Revert back to the 6 day working week and you could keep the FT positions.

That's going to happen eventually whether we like it or not, along with the scanning of every last item passing through the network

I job share ('on' Thursday to Wednesday, 'off' Thursday to Wednesday) so a five day week could see an end to that.

If we work five days, I wonder how they would work out my 23.5 house a week. Three days at 4.5 hours and two days at 5.00 maybe?

At the moment I do park and loop with a driver, and our two deliveries take 4.5 hours to complete. If deliveries are to be extended and we spend more time out of doors (deliveries will take longer than 4.5 hours)...will I be able to cut off when my 4.5 hours are up?

I've just thought - maybe one will do a full time shift Monday and Tuesday, plus half day Wednesday. The other half day Wednesday and two full shifts Thursday and Friday. Then swap over...

PT 22.5hr OPGs before Delivery Methods revision at my depot typically worked 1000-1430, five days a week, supposedly delivery only (prep all done by FT before they arrived). :left: ;liar

However, on Saturdays, the PT staff were often encouraged to come in for 1 hour of prep overtime... Strange that, as if it (double prepping by FT) was not really working and managers were concerned about cut offs all over the shop. :chuckle

A move to a 5 day week would remove the need for 1/6th of the workforce.

Whilst I agree , the number of people employed by Royal Mail is continually falling and I suspect they won't care about that to much
I wonder how many people we have lost in the last 20 years
