Can you carry a big heavy box over slippery rocks and slushy snow, while at the same time dodging penguins?

Are you happy not to shower for up to a month, live in close proximity to three people and 2,000 smelly penguins for five months?

Those are just two questions being asked of prospective job applicants for an Antarctic post office position.

The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust is recruiting for a team of four to spend five months (November to March) running the shop, post office and museum, as well as carrying out maintenance, at Port Lockroy on the tiny Goudier Island off the Antarctic Peninsula.

The island, home to 2,000 Gentoo penguins, was also once home to a British base and research station at Port Lockroy. The base was abandoned in 1962 but was restored in 1996 and now receives about 18,000 visitors in the November-March period, who post on average 70,000 items of mail.

The base’s post office and other operations raise money for the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust.

The job ad describes living conditions in the port as “comfortable though basic with no mains power, heat or water, and limited communications”.

Each year we take on seasonal staff to live and work at Port Lockroy for the Antarctic summer.

Those selected for interview will need to be available to take part in our selection process in the UK on 11th and 12th May. Successful applicants will need to be available for training in the UK for up to 5 days in the week beginning 14th September 2015.

FAQs: Below are some of the common questions that we have been asked:

Do I need Post Office experience?

You do not need Port Office experience for this job. The position of Port Lockroy Assistant is far more than just 'Post Office Worker', and we look for a variety of skills. More information can be found on the Jobs page in the detailed job description.

Do you pay for travel to selection and training? Do you get paid to attend training?

We require all of our shortlisted candidates to attend two days of selection in the UK. We are unable to cover travel costs for this event, and so candidates will need to make their own way to Cambridge. Accommodation and food is provided during the event.

The selected team need to be available for up to five days (unpaid) in Cambridge in September for training.

Again, we cannot pay for travel to and from this event, but accommodation and food are provided.

All travel to and from Antarctica will be covered by the UKAHT.

Do I need to speak English? Do I need to be a British Citizen?

You do not need to be a British Citizen to apply for this role, although you must be able to come to the UK in May and September as discussed above.

A good level of English is required for the positions at Port Lockroy.
