Bizarre post, but I've occasionally wondered this...
Mail posted on Scottish islands, the outer Hebrides & Orkney/Shetland especially - does this get any kind of "local" sorting first, to weed out anything for local delivery, or does it all get sent back to the mainland (Inverness?) first?

not any more in the past there used to be some degree of local sorting, some areas had a local post box but now all the mail goes to mainland then glasgow to be sorted (from west coast anyway)

We get roughly 800-1000 kgsinto Aberdeen flown from Shetland and Orkney every day. This includes Parcelforce items as well. Letters and flats are mostly faced up, bundled and trayed and why would they go to the bother of doing that if they were not extracting the local mail first. How ever I don't know if they actually do this.
