Tributes paid to postman Andrew Foy brother of Premier League referee Chris Foy

TRIBUTES have been paid to a well-known postman who died after collapsing while on a bike ride.

Andrew Foy, 47, was found unconscious by a member of the public next to his bike on Union Bank Lane, Sutton Manor on Saturday afternoon.

He had worked for Royal Mail for almost 30 years but was not on duty at the time of his death.

Andrew is the brother of St Helens-based professional football referee Chris Foy, 52, who officiates primarily in the Premier League.

Police have confirmed they were called to reports a man was lying on a grass verge near a pedal bike and officers attended the scene near Union Bank Farm.

He was taken by ambulance to Whiston Hospital for treatment, but died shortly after arriving there.

Several tributes have been paid to Andrew on social media website Facebook including one from Leanne Holder saying: “He was always out on his bike, seemed to be quite a fit man. So sad.”

Royal Mail delivery office manager Andrew Teall said: “Royal Mail can confirm that one of our postmen, Andrew Foy, based at St Helens delivery office, died at the weekend while out on a bike ride.

“Our thoughts are very much with his family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.”

A spokesperson for the coroner’s office said Andrew died of natural causes and a post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause of death.

Wife's tribute to 'gentle giant' Andrew Foy

THE devastated wife of Andrew Foy, who died after collapsing during a bike ride, says the “gentle giant with a great sense of humour” will be missed for evermore.

Jane, with whom Andrew had two children – Rachel and Daniel – says the kind words and tributes from loved ones, friends and colleagues are giving the family some comfort.

Postman and keen cyclist Andrew, who was 47, was found unconscious next to his bike on Union Bank Lane, Sutton Manor, as reported in last week’s Star.

It has since come to light that he suffered a heart attack as a result of an undetected defect.

He is the brother of St Helens-based professional football referee Chris Foy, 52, who officiates primarily in the Premier League.

Wife Jane said: “My lovely husband Andrew, Rachel and Daniel’s dad, died on Saturday, January 31, in Union Bank Lane. He was enjoying one of his usual cycle rides when he collapsed and then died.
“Family, friends, colleagues and his postal customers have offered kind thoughts and prayers which have provided us all with comfort.

“Some remember him as a gentle giant with a great sense of humour; many believe they are better people for knowing him. He will be missed for evermore.”

She thanked those who helped her husband: “Andrew was kindly attended to by a passer-by, police, paramedics and the crew of the air ambulance - to each we are eternally grateful.”

Andrew was a well-known postman and had worked for Royal Mail for nearly 30 years. He was not on duty at the time of his death.

Tributes have been paid to Andrew on social media website Facebook including one from Stuart Henderson: “Played rugby with Andy; what a lovely lad and a credit to his family. Sad loss, our thoughts are with him and his family.”

Carol Ann Neilson said: “He was our postman. He was a lovely man, RIP.”

Tony Finney said: “What a loss, a big lad with a friendly smile for anyone. RIP Andy. Condolences to all the Foy family.”

Andrew’s funeral will be held at St Helens Crematorium on Wednesday, February 11 at 3.30pm with a celebration of his life afterwards at Bishop Road Police Club.
