Say your starting time is 0630 you swipe in at 0629 no problem you swipe in at 0630 no problem then you swipe in at 0631 and suddenly you are late ie just the same as phoning in sick. So this has serious implications re the attendance procedure and you don't need to be brain of Britain to work out that this is a real easy way for the company to get rid of people. We are a private company now!!
my last job you clocked in and out , if your start time was 6.00 and clocked in at 6.01 you got docked 15 mins pay . so you didn't start while 6.15 simple.
Yes and that's great that you just got docked 15mins but in a place I worked the late swipe meant a sick occasion!
What if you get to work on time, but there's a dozen people in a queue waiting to clock in as close to time as possible? Someone is going to be late through no fault of their own. It'll mean getting there 10-15 mins early and clocking in as soon or as late as you dare leave it.
It's clocking out that I want it for. I'm sick of hearing "Did you sign out?" when I tell the joker I was over and OT needs marking down, and, "Make sure you come back and sign out", after a ten minute chat about the reason I'm leaving a loop in.

My old job, you would some times have a que for the machine but it would take no long then 30 seconds for it to clear.
For people moaning that you will get docked 15 for being late, well then don't be late, and on the odd occasion its a genuine reason then you can tell your Dom who can manually change it so you don't get docked. Same as if you forget to clock in or out.

Totally agree tuffers. Saturdays were made for football. RM used to pride itself as a "family friendly" company. How is family friendly not being able to take your son/daughter to the national game? If it clashed with prayers for some religions, they would bend over backwards to accommodate them. Not being racist. Just standing up for a good old british institution.

But, like it or not, Saturday's just another working day now and aiming to "to get done early" isn't practical with a 2.45pm finish time.
Watching football or working for Royal Mail, the choice is yours.

Shouldn't be a choice. Since joining RM, my starting time has been pushed back 3 and a half hours some weeks hence finishing time likewise. Every year I fill out last page of "have your say" and state I do not want to work late Saturdays. What we get printed in The Courier is" We hear what you say, you want more d2ds for more company profit"

Ummm no. If you wanted to go to football on Saturdays then you shouldn't have chosen a job where you have to work saturdays!

No excuse if u have to be there 15 mins early to avoid a late then be there. Earthquakes, storms , power outages, snow, ice, cattle on the road etc are not valid excuses for late comers.....the swipe card is the rule! Now forget RM 2000!
When we start the job most of us start at 5am and finish for 11.30 on Saturdays without Mailsort or extra ISP. Now the job changed a lot which made it more difficult for football fans to attend the matches. Lot of changes weren't good enough for workers.

"have your say" is simply to make you think you're being listened to such that you will be a tad happier with your lot
They're not interested that you do not want to work late Saturdays and they know there are plenty out there who would, and for the minimum wage.
On the one hand it would be a fair way of working out workload and should highlight early starters. However my years at RM tell me that if you provide any form of real evidence of work pattern then RM will find a way of using it against you.
Not that I don't trust anyone but I would say NO for the time being.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........
I wonder how many of those calling for clocking in machines have ever experienced them in working life? Sickness and absenteeism increases, and flexibility goes out the window. Can't be many clock-punchers who wouldn't swap to signing-in in a heart-beat.
Talk about sledgehammers to crack nuts...
Can anyone please explain how it will actually stop anything, as someone has already said early starters who'll continue and just clock in at their correct time, like they now sign in at their correct time, so nothing gained there, clocking out they will just finish early and go home, come back at correct time to clock out or even get someone else to clock them out, who would police it, the DOM and line managers at my last office where to busy doing uncovered walks and cut offs, when they aren't they would be taking the chance to go early themselves. So might work for indoor staff but will be a waste of money on outdoor duties, and now RM is private they won't be wasting money on something like this.

Changing Saturdays to a normal working day was not forced upon us the union membership voted to agree to it

RM have no interest in implementing anything like this, they get thousands of hours worked for free at the moment, implementing them would cost RM a fortune in the long run, it's not in their interest to insist they are put in place
