Could someone please explain to me what 318 actually is:

I hear it soo much on here but strangely never at work!!!!
I've tried the search function but only found like a million posts with it in the topic.

I know it sounds a bit dumb but any1 any1, I've only been with rm 2 years :Very Happy :Very Happy

As far as i know a 318 (been with RM 8 years and never seen one)
is a list of how your duty is performed for example
5.00am-5.30am walk prep
5.30-7.30 sorting (IPS)
7.30-9.30 WALK PREP
9.30-9.45 missorts redirections bag up
9.45-10.25 meal relief
10.25-13.55 delivery

BUT IF YOU ASK TO SEE THE 318 FOR THE DUTY YOU ARE PERFORMING
GOOD LUCK THE MANAGER WILL JUST TELL YOU IT IS AS DIRECTED
AND YOU DO AS HE SAY'S

FLEXIBLE WORKING DOING IT FOR YEARS
THE ONLY THING ON OUR SIDE IS TO DO THE JOB PROPERLY
AND WORK YOUR HOURS
GET YOUR HEAD ROUND NOT RUSHING TO FINISH EARLY
AND WHEN IT'S FINISHING TIME SEND IT BACK

When you sign on for your duty (each day when you sign in and out) you should have a number next to your name. Thats the duty number. go into your Resourcing section and ask to see the duty books yours should be listed.

318's are also located outside the recourses (book room)

most duty's incorporate an as required directive.

If your taken out of your duty structure as per 318 RM cannot then replace your job with someone else - This is the practice at our office. If you are removed to perform other duties and someone else is placed on your job - you have the right to return to it, so long as there is work you do your 318. Royal Mail want to do away with this and have no structure with assigned duty's thus leaving it to the managers to pick where you are placed - this can be open to abuse as the more experienced are used rather than the ones who are slow etc.

your 318 is basically as has been said a job description of the duty you are on. big reason your dim wants flexible working in is that people for years in strong offices have been saying they wont do certain tasks dims want us to do as its not part of their 318 (which is made up when the duty created or on a resign printed out again). the as directed rule always been there at the bottom of the 318 but it also state something along the lines of alterations must be dated and signed by the manager and unit rep. this would come about if your consistently being asked to do a different task than that you had signed the duty for.

318 went up in our workplace two weeks ago, first time I'd heard about it or seen them, now taped to each frame.
