Whilst it is understandable for members and Union to be concerned about jobs; the business has to do what is right for the business - don't they?

RM cannot simply continue to employ people in jobs that could be dispensed with by making investment in automation and 'optimisation of all the resources including labour...

Like I said, it will be hard for the Union to argue against the business moving forward. And that is within the agreement for a no-strike deal and the other clauses on terms and conditions...

This will be the start of a predominately P/T workforce, 24hrs being the max, twiddled with O/T, we have already witnessed RM trying to only employ new people on MAX 25hrs, took it strait to disagreement, time will tell, not looking good in deliveries boys/girls :wave :wave

I think they can argue whether the changes are purely profit driven and will lead to a worse service for our customers which in turn would be bad for the company in the long term

You just said 'whether' the change will lead to a worse service... They cannot argue on whether this or whether that - they have to have a coherent and conclusive argument against 'work optimisation' will lead to a worse service for customers.

And customers getting their mail around 3pm is not a worse service in my book; they should be happy to be getting a 6 day service for starters - it does not happen in many countries...

The CWU is now a passenger when it comes to hard business decisions. The whole point of privatisation is for RM to have more funds to invest in automation and become more efficient and make more profits: nothing is going to stop that!

The biggest stumbling block in terms of job cuts for RM now is not what the Union or members think but the cost of VR. I do not think they can really go Compulsory Redundancies - it will be challenged vigorously.

RM and some other public companies have been put in a quandary with the flexibility around retirement age. I bet they now wish all those of retirement age will just go... I know of at least 2 in my smallish office that is waiting for VR rather than retire - who can blame them!

I'm 18 years in and nobody has started in our office on more than a 25 hour contract in that time. I started on the same day as 4 others on a 18hour contract . 6am-9am 6 day week. I thought that was the norm. DO has about 85 staff.
M8 I am 20+yrs in and was one of the first part timers in the business, back in the day when someone retired/IHR or whatever their duty went on the board as fulltime, everyone could then apply and the duty at the end would then become vacant, so it gave the P/Timers the opportunity to move on up, what happens now is nobody gets THAT choice, RM take out about 15hrs as a saving and re/advertise at 24/25hrs, hence a predomantly P/Time workforce, locally we have been presented with this and took to disagreement (pending) :wave :wave

Our union rep got every temporary member of staff in our office a permanent contract late last year. Those on temp FT got permanent FT and even the recent starters got permanent PT.

So if anyone goes from our office RM will be paying for it!

Well the new agreement didn't say 75/25 split, that was the 2010 ratio, which as we all know was a crock of sh1t. The new agreement said predominantly full time without a specific quota, now that could mean anything. There was never any check and balance as to how that ratio was going to be maintained and by the same token this predominantly full time ratio won't be policed either.

How ironic that we hear from the union "this is to protect full time jobs", great for old dingo and his buddies they aren't going to feel the big pointy stick up the jacksie.

If it is an opinion I believe it's an informed opinion and won't be too far away from the actuality.
