Royal Mail posts rise on Dutch bid talk

Speculation about a possible Dutch bid helped make Royal Mail one of London’s biggest gainers on Monday.

MainFirst, the German brokerage, argued the case for Royal Mail merging with PostNL in the second half of 2015, once regulatory reviews in the UK and the Netherlands were complete.

A tie-up between the companies could deliver as much as 70 per cent of valuation upside for both stocks, MainFirst said. Royal Mail would benefit from PostNL’s experience in building a state of the art parcel network while PostNL would repair its balance sheet and gain expansion in markets beyond Benelux, analyst Tobias Sittig said.

He said GLS, Royal Mail’s pan-European division, would be a good fit for PostNL’s parcels business. PostNL has nearly 70 per cent of the consumer market in Holland but has had to invest heavily to fend off competition from business-to-business operators, and generates no synergies with its standalone letters division.

Royal Mail closed 2.3 per cent higher at 451.3p, giving it a market value of £4.5bn. PostNL’s enterprise value at Monday’s close was about £1.6bn.

What gets me about all these news rumours is that i thought all these behind the scenes talks were private to stop insider dealing? There's a lot of money to be made from prior information

A crooked business that is, financial reporting. It's another big poker game with the cards stacked in the favour of the establishment. What a farce it is to supposedly open up companies 'to the public' when it's the same old families and groups firmly in control of things.

Royal Mail’s (LON:RMG) share price has tumbled this morning, shedding the nearly three percent gain in the previous session. Yesterday, the British postal services firm climbed to the top of the FTSE 100 leaderboard, its stock underpinned by speculation about a possible Dutch tie-up bid.

The Financial Times yesterday revealed that German brokerage MainFirst had argued the case for Royal Mail merging with PostNL in the second half of 2015, once regulatory reviews in the UK and the Netherlands were complete. According to MainFirst, a deal between the companies could deliver as much as 70 percent of valuation upside for both stocks.

The FT quoted analyst Tobias Sittig as saying that Royal Mail would benefit from PostNL’s experience in building a state of the art parcel network while PostNL would repair its balance sheet and gain expansion in markets beyond the Benelux countries. Obviously a very slow day in the city. FT are obviously at war with Credit Suisse' evaluation of OUR RM. Anything to pump up the share price. I can understand RM buying a Dutch parcel Co owned by the Germans but not vice versa. RM will probably get their fingers burnt again after the French fiasco.
