Ahead of Vince Cable's meeting with heads of banks today (Tuesday) to discuss banking services at the Post Office, the CWU says the coalition government is failing the post office network.

This latest attempt by the Business Secretary is a lame PR effort ahead of the election. We've been listening to promises over post office banking for years but have seen no progress.
Billy Hayes 2010 "The Lib Dem policy of mutualising the Post Office has been kicked into the long grass after a significant consultation exercise costing the taxpayer goodness knows how much. This latest talk over Post Office banking merely highlights the government's failure to either set up a Post Bank or get all high street banks to make their services available through the post office network.

"The Post Office remains an important service in communities across the country but lack of action and commitment by this government, along with the uncertainty thrown up by splitting from Royal Mail, means it is struggling.

"We would like to see a dedicated Post Bank set up to bring reliable services and genuine choice to the UK's banking sector. Failing that, we support greater tie-in with high street banks to improve access to banking services through the post office network."

CWU is the largest trade union in the communications sector and represents workers across the Post Office and Royal Mail.
