Leek postman charged with destroying parcels worth 5k

POSTMAN Christopher Salt will appear in court next month accused of destroying hundreds of letters and parcels.

The 47-year-old, from Westwood Road, Leek, will appear before magistrates in Stafford on February 18.

Salt has been charged with damaging postal packets valued over £5,000 between May 21, 2010 and June 9, 2014.

He has also been charged with intentionally delaying 635 packages in the course of their transmission between August 27, 2013 and June 6, 2014.

He was told to appear before Stafford Magistrates Court this week for a hearing.

But he failed to turn up and now a warrant with bail has been issued. His case has been adjourned and re-listed for a month’s time.

I appreciate that Royal Mail operate a, guilty until proven innocent, and even then we don't believe you, policy. However outside of this "august" organisation, I believe there is a presumption of innocence. Give the man a chance, before condemning him.

Yes but the trial isn't just concerned about evidence of his guilt, but also evidence of his innocence - they balance both and come to a decision. Being innocent isn't sexy for newspapers hence why they don't report or concentrate on it. People being considered guilty before trial is a bit Stalinist for me.

I wasn't disputing the freedom to publish contemporary news stories, however , what if I live in the area and get called for jury duty? Whilst I could claim a conflict of interest as an employee, I could be registered on the customer forum. Hence my post regarding innocence or presumption thereof. Surely it isn't about predicting the outcome , but discussing the matter and drawing inferences as to his guilt or innocence without hearing the full facts .
