Mornington Road closed after Royal Mail van crash

A DRIVER has been taken to hospital after a Royal Mail van was involved in a crash with three cars.

The crash happened in Mornington Road, Heaton, at 2pm today when the Royal Mail van smashed into a blue Chevrolet, pushing it onto two parked cars — a silver Toyota MR2 and a silver Peugeot 206.

The female driver of the Chevrolet had to be freed from the car by the fire service and was taken to hospital as a precaution with minor injuries.

The driver of the postal van was uninjured but was checked over by paramedics at the scene.

Ian Ainsworth, watch manager at Bolton central fire station, said: "The female driver of the car was taken to hospital and she did have some internal pain but we think she was okay.

"She wasn't trapped as such but we brought her out through a rear window of the car."

Police, two fire engines and an ambulance attended the scene.

The cars were towed away and the road unblocked by about 3pm.

Shaunel Finney, aged 26, of Mornington Road, said: "I heard a really loud bang and I knew straight away it was a crash.

"Crashes happen around here all the time on this road. Something needs to be done about it.

"It's a miracle no one been hurt.

"The junction with Harrow Road is a particularly bad junction.

Paul Townsend, aged 59, also of Mornington Road, added: "Cars go very fast around here. We've been campaigning to get speed bumps or some form of speed measure on this road because cars fly up and down here all the time.

"I've lived here 20 years and have seen so many accidents on this street."
