A top public relations expert and magistrate is believed to have been stabbed to death by her husband, who then killed himself.

Detectives are investigating a suspected 'murder-suicide' after the bodies of Yvonne Davies, 46, and her husband Andrew, 45, were found at their home in Stockport.

Mrs Davies was a respected and award-winning PR professional in Greater Manchester, and the couple have a young daughter.

She was head of communications and public relations at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs a number of hospitals including Manchester Royal Infirmary and Saint Mary's Hospital.

It's understood Mrs Davies' close colleagues have been informed and are 'absolutely devastated' and struggling to come to terms with her death. She sat as a magistrate at Manchester magistrates court since 1999.

As part of her role at the hospital, Mrs Davies met a host of celebrities including Manchester City star David Silva and Hollywood star David Hasslehoff.

The bodies of the couple, both believed to be aged in their mid-40s, were found at their home in Stockport last night.

Mrs Davies was found with stab wounds and her husband, a Royal Mail worker, was found hanged, but post-mortem examinations to determine exact causes of death are due to be held.

Police aren't looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths and have confirmed 'no third party involvement'.

Neighbours have spoken of their shock as they spoke of a 'nice, normal couple'. One said their bodies were found after a man frantically smashed through the front door with a hammer following 999 calls made to police over a 'concern for welfare'.

The house remained sealed off for forensic investigation today as experts combed the entire area for clues.

Police patrols in the area have been stepped up.

A 48-year-old woman who lives opposite said: 'They were just a nice, normal couple. They were quiet, but friendly. I saw them on Thursday and my son saw them on Friday morning and everything seemed to be fine. There certainly wasn't any indication that anything was wrong.

'It's just a huge shock to everyone and very, very sad. I just feel sorry for the little one, to go to school in the morning and come back and find you've got no mum and dad. It's awful.'

The woman said she first became aware of the incident early yesterday evening.

She said: 'My husband went to walk the dog and he said "there's something going on over the road." There was a commotion and people standing outside the house. Then a man, we're not sure who he was, smashed the front door with a hammer and got in. It was him who found them.

'Within a matter of minutes the police arrived with their sirens blaring.'

Another man, who lived next door, said: 'We knew them a little bit, enough to say hello but we weren't particularly close. They were very quiet and kept themselves to themselves. It's just a massive shock.'

Detective Superintendent Emily Higham said: 'At this time we are making initial enquiries into the death of this man and woman and a post-mortem examination is yet to take place.

'However, at this stage, we do not believe there is any third party involvement and we are not currently looking for anyone in connection with their deaths. The community will be understandably shocked therefore we do have extra patrols in the area to offer some reassurance.

'A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths is now underway.'
