LTB 015/15 - Fleet Workshop Assistant Trial
No. 015/2015
Ref: PTC/RE/dj/235
Date: 13 January 2015
TO ALL BRANCH SECRETARIES WITH ROYAL MAIL MEMBERS
Dear Colleague
RE: Fleet Workshop assistant – Trial
As part of the RM Fleet negotiating agenda associated with the Agenda for Growth agreement there was a commitment to trial a semi-skilled support grade within the RM Fleet workshop network. The trial is an attempt to overcome the problem RM Fleet has found in trying to recruit fully skilled Vehicle Technicians in certain areas. The premise for the trial is to establish if it possible to create an ongoing workload for a separate workshop semi-skilled grade by removing lower/semi-skilled work from skilled Technicians and transferring that to the trial grade, which in theory frees up more time for skilled technicians to undertake higher skilled tasks.
The PEC has now agreed the Terms of Reference (TOR) for the trial and the locations where the trial will take place. Advertising and Recruitment for these will be undertaken locally. For the purposes and duration of the trial the grade will be known as a Fleet Workshop Assistant.
Recruitment will first be offered to OPGs on a voluntary six month secondment basis but where there are no suitable volunteers agency staff will be used. Pay for the duration of the trial will be OPG + TPM allowance, with a negotiation on the permanent T&Cs to be agreed where there is a successful conclusion of the trial.
On the job training will be provided for the work to be undertaken and a list of the semi-skilled tasks is contained in the attached TOR and job advert.
The workshops/RM locations involved will be Leeds, Gillingham, Manchester, Newtownabbey, Preston and Carmarthen, with the recruitment process expected to start in mid-January.
Any enquiries should be addressed to Ray Ellis’s department, quoting reference PTC/RE/dj/235.

Yours sincerely
Ray Ellis,
Assistant Secretary
