Another Christmas is over. Another year has begun. I visited several Royal Mail sorting offices as I do every Christmas.

The posties do a job we all appreciate and should not take for granted. What is clear to me is that the Royal Mail’s greatest asset is the men and women who deliver letters and packages the last mile to our door.

The collapse of City Link on Christmas Eve came as a shock and with terrible timing. It shows that those private companies who are seeking to cherry pick Royal Mail business are not guaranteed market success.

The sale of Royal Mail has been criticised in some quarters. Some say it was sold too cheaply but there would have been more criticism if the shares had not been taken up. The company has been floated, freed from its pension liabilities and able to invest and compete.

The universal service obligation is a statutory obligation on Royal Mail but is also its unique selling point as it delivers to every address across the United Kingdom at a uniform rate.

It is especially valuable to Scotland where the costs of delivering to rural areas and Highlands and Islands across a sparsely populated area is borne by the revenue generated in the heavily populated conurbations south of the border.

Unlike too many private carriers, Royal Mail does not charge a premium to deliver in our area.

The people who deliver to our door often offer service above and beyond the call of duty and this is the time of year to show appreciation.

I could not agree more! This job can be a right downer sometimes and the workload can be very heavy but over a year period; it is not exactly a hard hard job for about £20,000 basic for a full time staff.

We can take things easier if we all try. No one is going to be whipped into doing far more than they could possibly do within their contractual time. And when we start to do the job properly and a reasonable pace, we can expect our Union and members to be supportive...

Unless you are one of the many poor sods on a 3 month rolling contract or worse and are worried it won't get renewed by a sadistic manager!

work to your time, don't do ot, take your breaks, don't start early. that's all right if you are full-time. some part timers rely on overtime and therefore they get taken advantage of. don't think there is many places where you can work for years without being given a full time contract.

I do not understand how coming in early, not taking breaks and not working to your time helps in terms of 'not being taken advantage of'???

However, I do understand that some* part timers really do need the overtime and therefore will try not to rock the boat too much; but that really depends on the office. In some offices, you ight struggle to get OT and in others, they might be begging you to do OT.

Unity is key and the leaders should be the long-term staff and most likely full timers because very often they are sitting pretty and if they stick together and put their foot down; managers will often acquiesce. A strong office should really mean that OT is shared fairly and no one is disadvantaged for being PT, junior or working to time or favoured for being a 'worm' or speedy Gonzalez....

* Some part-timers are also long-term staff that do not need the extra income and have very good rounds. Some PT are also people that will rather work part-time to keep their benefits (tax credits, family credits and so on). We are not all in the same boat!
