I understand that a temproary SO was uncovered for the exclusive use of casual Labour in North London, which, if used on strike days, would have been illegal, if mail was sorted there.
A storage unit is in operation at Aztec West Bristol, too, if you were wondering what happened to the Bristol Mail. The Area H&S, and our shift rep have visited, yesterday. Wayne Jay just happened to be up there, too yesterday lunchtime.
Are CWU going to persue the use of casual labour with RM in the courts? They were used in the Mail Centre on strike days.
(although, ultimately, it is not RM who would be in big trouble - rather, the agency that supplied them).

RM would still suffer
We must supply these agencies with legal action.
It means if they are hit by fines that they will think twice about supplying strike breakers in the future.
And we must start preparing for the future because if we get an acceptable settlement this time all we have won is a battle.
Let's not think for one minute that RM won't continue a war of attrition on our pay and conditions and the service.
We must 'work to rule' surely everyone can see this and the union must make a determined effort to publicise how we should be working in a safe manner.
RM will end up begging us to go back to the bad old Spanish Practtices to save their bacon - but we have to resist - do the job properly and cut down on all the misdeliveries, make sure 739s are left, signatures obtained and items not dorstepped or left hanging out of a lb.
We have really been p**ssing customers off with this and it has got worse since we all started tearing round to get finished a bit earlier. I think it makes more sense to put a bit of quality back into the job - better than going back to office - and we build up more respect from our customers the bulk of whom are decent people.
We get all the delivery procesures right then when anyone complaims about TOD then refer them back to the DOM and tell them to complain in writing and explain that you are not responsible for delivery time which is down to management.
Let's prepare for the next battle - let's work to get even more of the public on our side - we can't relax because Leighton or his successor and their puppets will already be scheming on the next stage of their campaign to destroy the CWU to prepare RM for a casulaised non-unionised workforce to make it easier to sell.

This dispute is far from over. When it is I hope we all learn a few lessons.Hopefully even the headless chickens will see they are shooting themselves in the foot.As union members we need to be more organised and stick together, as divided we fall.
Perhaps we can ask our friendly strike breakers, why they are in the union and if they are not going to support it, or are only in it for self gain, they should get out!
The CWU has to increase the membership and make sure everyone gets involved at local level.
It also has to improve communication with the membership and more importantly, with the media.
And last but not least lets all remember what New Labour is all about - PRIVATISATION.
This is a great public service, lets try and keep it!

Trying not to offend anyone but... aren't we supposed to do this anyway? Since starting work at Royal Mail, I get complaints from a lot of people such as mates, non Royal Mail work colleagues and family members etc that their postmen don't do the above - one of my mate's postman recently doorstepped his parcel in the rain, destroyed his book he got off eBay. He complained and they only gave him a month extra redirection, and he's well annoyed understandably.Do the job properly and cut down on all the misdeliveries, make sure 739s are left, signatures obtained and items not dorstepped or left hanging out of a lb.
I always re-deliver misdeliveries - even going to knock on the customer's door to get back a misdeliver and apologise, or walk half a mile to deliver it properly; get all signatures; leave 739s; doorstep anything or leave anything hanging out of a letterbox. If I finish late, I just claim overtime. I know most of you here on this forum would be the same, but why some postmen aren't doing that?
I've also seen quite a lot of comments online saying postmen are s**te, and I get a lot of flak from customers from time savings caused by the other 2 postmen (am on a job share with another postie) who do my walk as well. A couple days ago, the other postman left behind an extra bag he didn't deliver the day before - I had to do that bag on top of my normal walk... thanks mate...
Like you say, we need to show the public that we're good, but they think we aren't. The regular postman who deliver at my house always doorstep all my parcels and letters and never get signatures - once my girlfriend complained to him face to face, he just threw our post at her feet and walked off. I'm not sure if that was the regular, I suspect it was a reserve or floater, pissed that he's getting the flak caused by the regular. I'll have to have words with her.
I'm off to put on my flame suit - roast me gentle please :)

It is true to say the the service we once gave isn't of the same standard.Eddles wrote:Trying not to offend anyone but... aren't we supposed to do this anyway? One of the reasons is that standards of recruitment have dropped. Another is the job and finish syndrome, where a rush, rush, rush attitude is endemic. Early finishes can only be achieved by cutting corners in some instances and in others and probably the majority finishing on time. There isn't an easy answer but RM could perhaps spend more time training suitable candidates rather than using casuals.
