Postal Workers in Royal Mail's flagship South Midlands Mail Centre (SMMC), in Swan Valley Northampton have been raising money for good causes once again.
In April of this year a pool table was installed in this unit on a 50 / 50 profit basis with a hire company and the SMMC 50% profit all being donated to employee nominated charities.
But now a football raffle card scheme has been devised between the employees trade union the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and the SMMC management team, whereby employees make a £2 contribution, pick a team on the card and the prize on each card is a day off, donated by Royal Mail - the money raised then goes to charity.
In less than two weeks nearly £1,000 has been raised and a donation made to the Spencer Bridge Food Bank, Gladstone Road, Spencer. Employee's delivered much needed items such as long-life milk, baby food, cereals and toiletries to the Food Bank personally. See photo.
Gareth Eales, CWU Area Representative at the South Midlands Mail Centre and Councillor for the Spencer & Dallington Area said: "I am delighted so much money has been raised in such a short space of time.
"The football card initiative was agreed to give our members an opportunity to win some time off and raise money for such a worthwhile & needed facility at the same time.
"It is tragic that in almost 2015 Britain that facilities like Food Banks are required - supportive fundraising actions of this sort only underline the positive contribution trade unions & postal workers try to have on the wider society and we are very proud of that."
Bob Brady, Plant Manager said "Royal Mail is very pleased to make a contribution to such a worthy cause and the football card scheme was a fantastic idea and the company contributing some days off for the lucky winners is a small price to pay.
